Dyna, you evade what I wrote. Of course there are heavyweights that hit as fast as Louis...But has there been any large heavyweight that combined such devastating combinations and leverage, alongst with great handspeed as Joe Louis ever ? A Louis or Dempsey at their bests loved the "big boys" as they would get there "fustess with the mostess". You cite Usain Bolt as an example of speed for a" big man" at about 210 lbs. Would Bolt be ANYWHERE as fast were he to lug 230 or more pounds in his sprints ? You know the answer...
Aye,but YOU are assuming that Joe Louis at 200 pounds was made of the same MATERIAL as the ordinary 200 pound fighter, arent you ? Well Louis was more "special" than any puncher who ever lived...Yes Lennox was a hard puncher no doubt, but kindly watch young Joe Louis's deadly handspeed and killing power in the Max Baer fight, particularly with his triple left hooks on the truly concrete chin of Max Baer ...Watch his blazing punching combinations and tell me if Lennox Lewis came near the cobra like speed of the Brown Bomber ? Someone once described the prime Joe Louis's attack as " like a coil spring unwinding ".
At their very best, this would look similar to Lewis - Holyfield 1, though Louis would probably not hear the bell as he is not as durable as Holyfield.Lewis TKO 10 Louis
LOL, so the guy who was laid out not once but twice by ham and eggers, as a matter of fact he is the only Hwt champ with that glorious accomplishment is going to blow out Louis.............never going to happen, if you sleepwalk with a spent Holyfield for 24 rounds........if you walz with the extremely limited one trick pony Tua for 12...if trialhorse Mercer gets you into a life and death scenerio......if you have the shell of a shell Tyson impersonator in front of him and you trainer screams at him "you got a dead man in there , finish him off" and Lewis still plays it safe that should tell you guys something. Whenever Lewis sees a legitmate threat he plays it very.very safe and he would be protecting his mediocre chin by all means neccessary, he would never ever come out guns blazing and he reality he never ever did against top tier guys and no HBO hypejob Grant and the foul Pole dont count. Anyway , I could see Lewis outpoint Louis over 12 but in a 15 rounder Lewis gets laid out because he could not dictate the pace like he usually did aka impose his will. The reference to the mental Midget Golata is a joke..........who the F did that bum ever beat. There are some modern Hwts who would give Louis some major fits and some would lay him out but a shaky chin tenative when faced with a opponent he knew could hurt him Lewis aint the guy.
I agree with you 100% here Burt. Add the likes of Frazier in that company as well. He wants a nice big target to fire at so he can relentlessly tee off all night. I also feel the exact opposite is true for Holmes. I don't think he matches up that well against some of the smaller heavyweights throughout is history because he was so used to having big targets in front of him, to fire of his piercing jab.
JLP 6 and Burt are spot on here. Maybe I'm getting old but I'm not in awe of someone like Lewis. A big strong HW with a punch..and dangerous. But with limitations and certainly not unbeatable. Lewis, for all his size was tentative.when he should've been aggressive. it seems as if he thought too much instead of letting it hang loose. And against the best boxer-puncher ever to step in the ring Lewis would be thinking big time...to his detriment. Could Lewis win? Of course he could. Would he? I wouldn't bet the house on it.
Can everyone please get a handle on this please - I'm in no way saying people can't have 'an opinion'?? Clearly people have their own 'opinion' and clearly are entitled to there 'opinions' - obviously that's all fine and dandy but don't go stating things as fact that are completely ridiculous just to create arguments (and don't feckin defend these idiots when they do??!!) - look get this straight ok I was referring specifically to the fact that the guy stated that Holyfield was as badly deminished by the time he fought Larry Donald as Muhammad Ali was when he fought Trevor Berbick!!?? Come on man this is utter horse**** and I don't know why you are defending people when they make ridiculous statement like this?? Lets have intelligent discussion not just saying things which are patently untrue and then try and defend them because nobody has the balls to stop pussyfooting around with people who are just blatantly trolling - you know as well as I do that the analogy of Holy of Donald being as diminished as Ali of Berbick is basically akin to saying car A is the same age as car B so they are the same even the car B has had all its tyres let down!!?? Come on man? Stop defending these sorts of ridiculous things - please man up!!??
fair post but the long and the short for me, i've had some pretty stupid opinions back when i started and still have stupid opinions now. i'm just glad i wasn't banned and got the opportunity to be gently harassed and humiliated by the classic continue harassing him by all means, that's what we're here for
Know what your saying but there seem to have been an influx of newbies recently who know absolutely jack**** and are just saying utterly farcical things like this just to incite arguments - this place should be for intelligent debate between people who know wht they're talking about - as I said before opinions are one thin and opinions are opinions but these sorts of things are not opinions - it's just some stupid kids who are just trying to create arguments for a laugh just by saying the most outlandish and patently untrue things for a laugh to try and stir up arguments and turn the forum into a joke - it will end up driving away the genuine fans and the thing will just degenerate into a pile if **** - it's not intelligent debate when someone is saying sky isn't blue it's green with purple spots on it and then people are coming out and saying well that's ok it's just their 'opinion'!??? Come on man? I've just stopped posting on threads when these guys get involved because they're just coming out with anything - it's just spoiling the forum for the genuine fans
Appreciate the comment. Allow me to dissent. That's something of a bold presumption, a suggestion I wouldn't feel comfortable indulging with lack of concrete evidence. Check Holmes-Ocasio again. Larry crushed an unorthodox, low crouching challenger virtually with his jab alone, marching right through Jaws. [It seemed he scarcely took a backwards step in that one.] He had plenty of experience sparring with prime Frazier during his developmental period. His reign was not an era of short heavyweights [in sharp contrast to Frazier's]. For whatever it's worth though, Ocasio and Shavers were his two shortest challengers. Holmes took 27 of the 28 completed rounds against those two opponents. Snipes was something of a moving croucher at 6'2." Larry took nine of ten completed rounds from Renaldo. Only a pair of knockdowns separated Holmes from a total shutout of all three opponents. Frazier was very candid about disliking the logistics of combating similarly shorter opponents of much lesser quality [especially in his post fight interview following Terry Daniels], although he did this with some regularity. [Stander, Ziggy and Scrap Iron were actually shorter than he was, a situation Marciano only ever faced with Freddie Beshore.] Frazier really did prefer being able to tee up and off on taller targets, but despite this gearing, wound up with numerous opponents under 6'2." Not aware of Larry having any issues jabbing Shavers, Ocasio or Snipes, or ever complaining about any difficulties posed by shorter targets, but there's simply a dearth of evidence as to such. Jaws was certainly no ATG, but he does provide the best visual indicators contrary to this assumption.
