What a stupidly fought fight and gameplan. Seriously, I expect a lot better from Peterson. He is much much better than that. This was basically Bradley vs. Provodnikov gone wrong. Bradley fought a stupid fight but managed to scrape through by the skin of his teeth. Why did Peterson honestly believe he could stand and trade with a renowned puncher who had KO'd nearly 90% of his opponents? Is it bravado and "my cojones are bigger than your cojones"? They say - "Don't hook with a hooker"....What a stupid "strategy" from Peterson, if it even was a strategy to begin with! I even thought Barry Hunter was smarter than that. Absolutely craziness if you ask me. It also shows that Peterson didn't respect Matthysse at all.....and he paid for it. I don't get it because Lamont Peterson said before the fight - he didnt plan on getting hit, so he wasn't worrying about Matthysse's power. Saying and doing are two totally different things though. But what an idiot to dismiss someone who clearly hits harder P4P than probably anybody else in the sport. Madness.
He circled away from the left hook, an unnatural move whilst facing a big punching right hander, so he had given his tactics some consideration. He had to offer something to the Argie to make him think before walking forward and got caught exchanging - that can happen to anyone. Peterson showed tremendous strength to even get up from that
I really don't get it, this Matthysse is no stranger or pushover. His only two losses have been majorly disputed and the bloke knocks people out. 86.49% KO ratio and Lamont Peterson believed that out of all those others that have gone before, that he could take the mans punches. Out of the 34 fights he has won, 32 have been KO's. Madness.
He did well to get up from that knockdown, I agree....but its the fact that he got hit with that punch whilst trying to trade and hook with the expert hooker. You beat Matthysse by boxing over 12 rounds, obviously as his record suggests. Lamont Peterson however thought that he could war with an expert in war. Hopefully he learns from this loss. The faces ringside were stunned because he fought totally the wrong fight, he got hit and then it was all downhill from there. I rate Peterson aswell even with all the critics he gets. But fighting a fight like that against someone like Matthysse was stupidity. No defence, no care, "I can trade with him, don't worry"
i think the khan fight made peterson to be more of a fighter then he actually was, he got beat, put down and schooled by tim bradley and lost to ortiz, He's a sold fighter but nothing out of the ordinary
I don't thin Peterson had much say in what kind of fight it would be after the 1st knockdown, Matthysse got to him and I don't think he ever fully recovered well enough to start boxing at range again. As Mike Tyson once said 'everyone has a plan until they're punched in the face'
Peterson didn't choose to stand and trade. Matthysse dragged him into a dog fight by taking his legs away from. Prior to that, Peterson was boxing and moving.
Its not as cut and dry as that, when you get clobbered under them lights its not sparring where you will more likely get a second from your sparring partner to gather your **** and address the mistake, the mindset the mentality everything is different. Granted Peterson is a seasoned world level campaigner and you'd think he would have enough experience to get back to the game plan. Easier said than done most of the time, a fight is a fight, and when you get whacked its human instinct to whack back!
No, Peterson did choose to stand and trade... Peterson said in the post press conference that the game plan was to box him as you saw in round 1. But Lucas hit him on he back of the head which pissed him off and he decided to bang a bit.
Everyone has a gameplan until they get hit! Its so true! The idea is to hit and not get hit, easier said than done though of course. Peterson said that was the plan, but he was open from first bell. Peterson is a better boxer than that and he has proven to have better defence and IQ than that. Might have been just an off-night, all fighters have them. But it was a stupid mentality to go into a fight and want to trade with a renowned knockout artist. Peterson is not renowned for knocking people out, so why would you go in and fight like that with someone that is? Makes no sense, to me anyway. :huh
