    Enjoy.

    ----

Sanchez: Here we are in the Golpe A Golpe ring with Juan Manuel Marquez so he can explain what happened technically in the fight between Robert Guerrero and Floyd Mayweather, as well as that of Abner Mares and Ponce De Leon. Juan, combinations with southpaws…one always has to be careful when facing that profile.

JMM: It’s difficult. When you’re fighting a southpaw, it’s difficult. Just imagine, turning southpaw for you is already going to be difficult (laughs). For me, Robert Guerrero did very well the first two rounds, counter-punching that straight right hand from Mayweather, throwing the straight left well, and throwing the (right) hook to the body well also; counter-punching very well. But after, Floyd Mayweather was reading the fight very well. When he countered, he no longer threw the right as a straight, but as a hook (loops overhand right.) And he threw it as a hook several times. 3 times he threw it, and three times he landed it. In one round-the sixth or the seventh round- we saw him throw a straight, moving, and then changed it to a hook, then another hook, and then another, throwing it 3 times and connecting it 3 times.

Sanchez: Thanks for warning me (laughs after blocking hard mimes from JMM). Floyd surpassed him in all facets, but like we said, in the first rounds he battled a bit because of the counter-punches to the body, above all else from Guerrero.

JMM: He started out doing it really well. I don’t know why he didn’t continue it, or why he didn’t come back with that same shot, but upstairs. Why not a counter uppercut or counter left straight? They were important points. What surprised me was that, when Floyd Mayweather was against the ropes, he’d let him (Guerrero) go. He’d make him miss with a sidestep (skips leftward) and just leave him there (against the ropes). That’s an important point.

Sanchez: “Lo torreaba nada mas” (he evaded him as a matador would a bull but nothing more.)

JMM: Yes, “Lo torreaba nada mas”. My point is, if you’ve passed him (turned him), why not look for the fight, why not counter-punch, why not use combinations?

Sanchez: Now, Floyd Mayweather is very smart. And at long range, Juan, he works the straight punches to the body a lot. He’ll create distance, and suddenly come back (mimes jab to the body + right hand combination).

JMM: Yes, it’s the same thing he does with the right hand. He’ll throw the straight right downstairs, then come up with a left hook straight right combination upstairs (throws punches). Important combinations. Don’t get scared.

Sanchez: (laughs nervously, he blocked a hard straight right to the gut by a hair.) Now let’s talk about Abner Mares and Ponce De Leon. Very different fight, although also a fight of southpaw-orthodox stances. Ponce De Leon is the one with the punch, but without the chin or defense.

JMM: Ponce De Leon was throwing bolados (overhand shots), practically without any measure of distance, throwing them wild. Abner Mares was simply right here, in his guard (holds hnds up), jabbing, and would suddenly throw the right downstairs, the right upstairs, and that hook which surprised me that De Leon couldn’t get away from all night. He’d feint downstairs, and during the first knockdown of Ponce De Leon, he feinted a hook to the body, then brought it upstairs and sent Ponce De Leon to the canvas completely discombobulated.

Sanchez: He looked completely dismantled, Juan, the shot looked like it came from a huge puncher, a shot technically very well placed.

JMM: It was a shot with a very good trajectory. The left hook, if you throw it short, is very potent. Even if you don’t throw it hard, but you throw it in line (demonstrates path from the shoulder by the chin to the end of the fist in a short arc), it will land very hard, even if it doesn’t look like it on television.

Sanchez: At what height more or less does the hook travel?

JMM: The hook comes out at the height of the shoulder, well-aligned, and it doesn’t have to be thrown really hard. Just by doing the movement (throws hook), moving first at the shoulder and following that path, it can land very very hard.

Sanchez: So not too long, but not overly close to you, either…

JMM: Exactly. The important thing is how he feinted downstairs, and then came up to connect on Ponce De Leon and knock him down. In the second knockdown, we saw them on the inside, and we saw Abner Mares throw an overhand right, maybe he (PDL) didn’t see it, I don’t know if he threw it just to throw it as they were very tight on the inside, but Ponce De Leon dropped his guard and it landed hard.

Sanchez: Ponce De Leon left himself open. Abner has many resources/tools.

JMM: Yes, that overhand right sends him to the canvas, and from that point on the knockout comes from Abner Mares.

Sanchez: The Golpe A Golpe ring with world champion Juan Manuel Marquez.

This isn't a shot at Marquez. It's a testament to how tricky, crafty, and deceptive Floyd is if a Prof of Boxing (Juan) can't understand why opponents stop doing certain things while fighting Floyd.

I don't think he literally doesn't understand, he just thought it was something Guerrero should have followed up on. And he's right. He just watched the fight live and probably didn't bother to dissect a ton of GIF's like we do. Floyd discouraged Guerrero by throwing to the body (that straight right will stop you dead in your tracks), jabbing over Guerrero's right jab, and stopping him any time he tried to come in. He didn't think the risk was worth it. But because Floyd ducks down to his right every time, he really should have continued to try anyway.

Guerrero was surprisingly accurate to the body. There was one hard straight left to the pit of the stomach I want to dig up eventually.

MArquez was just pointing out some things Guerro could have done . But reality is Guerrero isn't good enough.

He also critiqued Floyd for not following up on Guerrero when he spinned him on the ropes, and not throwing combinations. Not that Floyd needed to, but if he was a combination puncher he'd have gotten guerrero out of there.

It's why I never hold a bad pick or ignorant statement from a boxer or trainer against them. They're not nerdin out like us.

I'm not sure whether I liked the breakdown more, or that JMM's demonstrations are described as part of it

    Must watch the video...
