How did the fans feel when patterson was koed and the media. also did anyone give patterson a chance in the rematch?
I don't think anybody....anybody....gave Floyd a chance in hell at Ingo in the rematch. Ingo's bingo would take Floyd out even quicker...most thought......
That's how I remember it. I was a big Patterson fan then even though I was still a pre-teen. Still, the way Ingo destroyed him in three rounds stood out in everyone's memories. Newsreel film of the fight was shown prior to movies in those days and that fateful third round shown on the big screen, and played over in slow motion was agonizing to watch for Patterson fans. Ingo was hailed as the next great heavyweight champion, and he was the favorite to win the rematch. Floyd was also up against the "They never come back" mindset, as nobody had regained the heavyweight crown, though many greats had tried.
Yes, after stopping Patterson in 1959, Ingo by and large was very highly regarded. He had, after all, stopped Eddie Machen in one round, then Floyd with a seven KD third round. Johansson had taken the heavyweight division by storm - he was undefeated, had a charming personality, was a bit of a ladies' man, and the media loved him. His stoppage of Patterson was compared to Dempsey's slaughter of Willard, and he was expected to repeat the feat in the rematch.
The boxing world could see no fault in Ingo...a huge bomber with that right hand...and the hype he had surrounding that "Bingo" of his....and being a glamorous, clean cut, playboy type, not seen since Max Baer, didn't hurt at all. Meanwhile, Floyd sulked, brooded and forged himself into a better fighter than he had ever been before..and since..and had worked up a genuine hatred for his conquerer..and that helped him to shock the world. I can only imagine what a high it all must have been for Floyd to prove all his doubters so wrong the way he did.
One of the best, hate-filled, revenge motivated left hooks in all of history....thrown by the meek, mild gentleman Floyd Patterson. It was a perfect bomb of a punch that ruined Ingo.
I was 21 at the time and a big Patterson fan. Leading up to the 2nd fight i was guardedly optimistic about Floyd's chances. I heard he had put on 8 lbs and was going to weigh 190 vs the 182 he weighed for the first fight. You always had to give Floyd a chance in any of his fights. He tended to be hot and cold. When he was on his game, he was always dangerous because he could punch and he put his punches together well. Bottom line is nobody can predict the future. I didn't know Patterson would win back the Title. I did however, have a sense that it would happen.
Floyd really done himself proud in that rematch...he was really worked up for it...and he hated the fact that he hated Ingo so much for that fight and the fact that he nearly killed him. Great, great fight for Floyd.
