If a white fighter (American) emerged today at 147....

I see americans live in a complicated world. This fighter is not a white american because he has an italian name. Another is not because he is a mexican. the other is not because he is mixed. man why is there such a big deal about race in america? there are SO MANY threads about race here and all of them are coming from americans.

 

Oh clearly, Billy made a good point, which I kind of addressed, but any new fans would be fly by night fans. I don't think you'd get a real boxing fan base built up. They'd watch for the superfight,(probably a PPV party or something along those lines, but highly doubt they'd pay for HBO, Showtime, cable etc. just to continue to watch that fighter.

The point about the promoters was an excellent one.

Lol. To be honest, I almost never read any of the race threads. But race relations is an important subject here. I don't know that I'd agree that all race threads are from Americans though.

 

A White American fighter that is elite would be huge. It really needs to happen because it would be good for the sport. I hate that Kelly didn't really pan out after his downward spiral after the Hopkins fight. With that said most White American who would be into combat sports would choose to be in MMA over boxing in a heartbeat so the chances of a future White American star is slim.

I think in order to transcend those boundaries, the fighter would have to be more of a public figure, and reach mainstream consciousness. Even Mayweather, the highest paid US athlete, isn't really a public figure along the lines of top athletes in other sports, black or white.

The US market is absolutely ripe for the picking, but I don't think it needs to be race specific. A guy who is a winner, has charisma and such, takes stiff challenges and most importantly, is exciting, could do great things for boxing.

Boxing is in a strange place in the US. I largely blame the promoters, and the feudalist alphabet orgs for the state of affairs. Things seemed like they were moving in the right direction for a while with CBS showing cards on free tv and such. But, that seems to have fallen by the wayside.

I think a better question is why do people still act like we are still living the the 1960s or some ****. All this **** about people not like Floyd because he is slick and black or just assuming if a white fighter came along and was decent that white people would love him are coming from ignorant, simple minded people that probably blame their hard life on their race and color instead of actually trying to do anything with their life.

If a white fighter came along with the ability and attitude of Rios, he would be liked for his crowd pleasing style and his never give up attitude. It's been like this for ages. Fans like those type of fighters and support them more, simply because they are in more crowd pleasing fights. People not like Mayweather has more to do with his obnoxiousness then his less then crowd pleasing style. This whole white and black BS shouldn't even be brought up nowadays. That **** is dead for the most part.

If a black fighter comes along that has a crowd pleasing style, they will be heavily liked. Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray, Roy Jones, and others were popular with everyone because of their style. If a white fighter comes along and has a crowd pleasing style, he will be liked because he has a crowd pleasing style. If a white fighter came along with the style of Mayweather and had the same personality he would have just as much hate as Mayweather receives.

In a country that immortalizes white boxers with movies (Chuck Wepner - "Rocky"; Mickey Ward - "The Fighter"; The Ray Mancini Story; Jake Lamotta - "Raging Bull") and routinely escalates white fighters way beyond their talent level (Morrison, Litzau, etc.), a world class white American fighter would be absolutely HUGE. Especially if he can be held up in contrast to the 'flashy Kneegrows' and 'non-English speaking Mexicans' that currently offend the sensibilities of many 'hard working' white folk.

Don't kid yourself, Bob Arum would trade his whole Top Rank roster for a marketable white fighter with world class talent.

Yeah, your right. Floyd isn't the highest paid athlete in sports because he is black. Oh wait, the man is making 30 million a fight despite that "drawback." Poor guy. I guess if all white people didn't hate him because he was black then he would be making twice as much.

Oh look, a black man was elected to president, twice. 30 years ago, people would have laughed at the thought of that. The race card exists in such small numbers that it ain't even worth bringing up. When you try to imply that their are white people that don't like Mayweather because he is black then their would be just as many black people that wouldn't like a white boxer if he got to where Mayweather was because he is white. It's on such a small scale now, and people still trying to act like it's the early 1900s or some ****. It's old. Move on.

 

Most young white guys here are training in MMA from what I've seen. Most younger kids here cares nothing about boxing. MMA has taken over in the USA and its time to face the facts.
