Joe Frazier (FOTC version) vs Lennox Lewis (late 90s)

Interesting matchup.

Lewis has all the physical tools to do a job on Frazier, but he would have to put on the performance of a lifetime.

Frazier gets tons of credit and rightfully so, for beating ALi. But part of the problem was Ali didnt hard enough to keep frazier off him, Lewis has one of the hardest right hands in heavyweight history. However Lewis enjoyed being in control of the fight, he liked having things his way, Frazier wouldnt give him that oppurtunity.

Frazier would take Lewis into deep waters, the deepest waters Lewis was ever in was against Mercer.

Tough fight to predict, how would Frazier react to a right hand from Lewis? like the ones he took Golota and Tyson out with?

Tyson would have a much easier time with Frazier than Lewis would IMO

he did blast some shw's,no doubt about that,but he was happy to box behind a jab against "small" hw,say holy or tua.

 

and a 00-01 Mike Tyson who weighed near 240pounds beat a 88 Tyson who weight 214-216 because 01 Tyson has the size advantage. Skill and heart is not relevant when compared to size

 

if this fight goes to the round 14-15 , joe would stop him late, if this fight ends early, then i t is a ko victory for lewis

 

except because this "smaller version" was stronger,more aggressive and harder puncher than lewis with a better chin. and a different style,dumb ****

 

I think Lewis has all the tools to nullify what Joe Frazier wants to do. He could take him out in the early rounds if he came out aggressive.

One problem though is Lennox`s mentality. He wasn't normally that aggressive. He may let Frazier get through those early rounds and start to Smoke.

I still have to favor Lewis because of his size, boxing skills and power. Lennox Lewis was a master of distance. He was tall yes but he used it as well as anyone Ive seen box. He fought tall.

As over-rated as i feel Lewis genuinely is, he has a good chance here. Frazier is one tough sob, but he's one-dimensional for the most part. I see it as a 'reasonably decent jack of all trades' (Lewis) vs 'an ATG-level-tough one-dimensional fighter' (Frazier). Both fighters possess the weapons to beat the other. This fight could easily go either way on any given day, but all things considered i'll take Frazier to win the majority of the time, likely by KO. Lennox's best chance is to outbox/finesse/snipe him, survive the distance and win a decision. Frazier easily possessed the power and skills to KO Lewis if they were to go toe to toe. If they bang, Frazier wins 9 out of 10 times. If it goes the distance, Lewis probably wins 6 out of 10 times. Close call.

 

You seem to think Lewis can't bang with anyone without coming out on the short end of things.

 

I'm assuming when you say "anyone" you're speaking figuratively? If by "anyone" you mean literally anyone, then no, that's not my opinion. If by "anyone" you mean good/great fighters in their prime, then yes.

Lewis would destroy Frazier and maybe in the first round. This is basically Foreman-Frazier, except Lewis is even bigger, technically better and faster

 

Left hooks were not a particularly useful tool against Lennox Lewis, and unless I missed something, the left is Frazier's chief weopon of choice. It can also be seen that as his opponents got larger, the more he struggled to win. Lewis would have been the largest man Joe ever fought ( with the possible exception of perhaps some early career journeyman that I may have overlooked, but certainly not a big man of world class ability. ) Joe would have an incredibly difficult time trying to land on Lewis who had significant height, reach and outside fighting ability. In the rare instance that Frazier did land, it wouldn't necessarily spell sudden doom for Lennox, as Joe was not a one-punch KO artist, and Lewis who survived the punches of David Tua, Vitali Klitscko, Tommy Morrison and many others had a chin that has become let's say... Underrated? The only possible thing that Frazier would have going into this fight is workrate and guts... But I don't think these things would be enough to win a decision or score a stoppage... And furthermore, the harder Joe worked early on, while taking huge shots, the more he'd get broken down and fatigued later... I don't see this as ending well for Joe Frazier

 

Futch and Yank would have Joe throwing a few more straight rights and right uppercuts to the body inside at Lennox when he's in close. More left hooks to the body and head.

Steward I think would emphasize the basic plan to beat Joe. Keep him at the end of his jab, don't let him get to the body, don't waste energy and shoot the uppercut to the head when he comes in.

I think Joe brings more than just workrate and guts to this fight. All of his opponents, even Foreman said Joe's left when it lands to the body hurts bad and it's just as nasty to the head. Joe's got strong legs and being a converted southpaw adds immediate power to his right hand when it's comes from behind.

I think Lewis' accuracy helps him against Joe. He has to let his hands go early because Joe wouldn't wait for him to throw punches. He's got to get ahead early on the scorecards with a couple of early knockdowns. Lewis could beat Joe by building a lead that Frazier might not have enough rounds to overtake in 12, not 15. He's not stopping Frazier like George did in 1973. Perhaps in 7 or 8 rounds maybe. Late 60's Frazier beats Lewis by mid to late round stoppage.
