RTV: What were your thoughts on Mares' performance against a guy that went the distance with Adrien Broner?

GR: [Laughs.] I think he's okay. I think he's tailor-made for me. I think that everyone is going to have this fight hyped if it does go down. I feel that everybody's going to have it so hyped up to be a great fight. They're going to hype him up to be a monster. But when I compete against him, it's going to be so easy. I like that, because that's going to really make it.

I love the fact that they're going to make this guy look like a monster, so that I can get him and beat him the way that I will beat him. It will make me look that much better.

He could be right. I really have no idea how good Russell is or isn't because he hasn't fought any live guys yet. If I were Mares, I wouldn't give Russell a second look until he secured one or two good wins.

Let's say he's right and he beats him. It's just another case of degrading your opponent and rendering your win over said opponent less meaningful. If he sucks and the work is so easy, it's not a big deal. Right?

Abner's resume is nasty for a fighter just really hitting his stride.

    He's always supposed to lose.

I like his confidence, but I'm getting afraid he made be too confident and is hearing too much of the hype the media and his fans are giving him

No. If a fighter is good, then he's good. It doesn't matter what the opponent says. What if Russell was fighting some scrub and tried to hype the guy up as a future HOFer, would that make the win any better? Of course not. The same is true the other way. Competitors routinely downplay the opposition. It's just another way to gain confidence.

Would love to see the fight but Russel needs to beat someone like Gonzalez first. He's done nothing to deserve a fight with Mares.

Nope, downplaying the opposition downplays a potential victory.

Point is, it's a moronic thing to say. He should just acknowledge Mares and then beat him, simple as. All this grandiose **** talking is better left elsewhere, as in nowhere.

Floyd Mayweather is ranked pound 4 pound number 1 and is considered one of the most talented fighters in boxing history. Let's say he's about to fight someone and his opponent says that he'll beat Mayweather easily and that Mayweather is tailor made for him. If that guy were to actually beat Mayweather, does that victory now mean less? The answer is a definite no. Again, just like proping a guy up doesn't make a win any better, downplaying the opposition doesn't make the victory any worse. How good a victory is depends on the level of oppostion, not some fighter's personal opinions on another fighter.
