Bottom line, he was a guy whose popularity out weighed his achievements. Certainly not the 1st or last. Reggie Bush comes to mind. Tit for tat gets us nowhere.

The idea that America's waiting for another Great White Hope is outdated. No more than a few years ago, there was an exciting knockout puncher who won the undisputed crown in a prestige division. If mainstream America were going to blow up over a white boxer, it'd have been done for Pavlik.

 

This shows the intelligence of some of the members on here. Everyone who is bringing up a white athlete likes to mention how clean cut, humble, and religious they are. It doesn't take a lot of common sense to realize those guys are well liked for their ability and the fact they actually act like a decent role model. Not simply because they are white and American. Ocho Cinco, Mayweather, and Broner are disliked because of there personalities, not because they are black. The fact that people think any decent white boxer would be a huge draw and somehow get special treatment don't know **** and are living in the past.

 

My point about Burns was more in reference to his humble personality and grounded attitude.
I wouldn't suggest for a second that the only reason he would be big was because he was white and I would hate for anyone to think I meant otherwise.

I didn't take offense to your post. But some people on here actually believe that if a white American fighter came along and was any good he would somehow be a mega star. Simple minded thinking, and we damn sure don't have that type of environment around today that was around years and years ago.

 

Big personalities sell.. And, as far as Lesnar goes, the fact that he could transition from A-list pro wrestler to actual champion fighter in unscripted fighting is pretty incredible. That also brought a lot of crossover fans. Looking like the Hulk didn't hurt, either.
