If Pavlik hadn't let the alcohol derail his career, he'd be the 3rd biggest draw in the world. Fun to watch. Good Kid from Youngstown Ohio. When he KO'd Taylor, he was the toast of the sport. Sad to see such a promising career fall short.

Wat. I've met plenty of Mayweather fans that were the whitest of white guys, and on the flip side black guys that hate Mayweather. Mayweather is the highest paid athlete year in year out and America is a over 70% white so who do you think is buying all those PPVs? Boxing in America isn't dead because the lack of white people support, it's because there's no HW division and a myriad of other bs.

Seeing how 147 has Mayweather Marquez Pacquiao the fighter would have a strong chance, Maybe instead of the good ole boy approach the White fighter players the villian that would be interesting Pavlik & Gerry Cooney in the past always placed the nice guy maybe a white american fighter with a cocky type attitude

Puzzling..it's an umm... question, no doubt.

I can't help trying to figure what the OP's getting at. Are you asking how boxing could be returned more to the mainstream, or just wondering if racial bias is alive and well. Why the 147 specification in either case? If you were looking at ways of increasing boxing popularity, HWs the one that'd bring the most interest from the wider population.

I don't know the current demographics of US boxing followers- but I'd guess a sustained intense promotion could create a buzz around a (loosely defined) 'white' fighter, which would then vanish as soon as they lost.

Why would the broadcasters and promoters make this kinda investment, unless they were sure of a good return which they can make far more certainly with their traditional market and business plan?

If there was an established production line of WASP boxers, I could see the investment being made, but I'd bet there'll always be far more hungry and determined kids coming from the statistically less privileged ethnic groups.

There's a reason boxing is seen as a blue collar, or minority sport. Getting hit has never been much fun.

PS It's easy to forget when you spend your time chatting on ESB that the average person you stopped on the street would probably just remember the names of Ali and Tyson (both African American, coincidentally).

The white population in America is smaller now, proportionately, than it has ever been. Plus, for the last couple decades it's been preached that being white is not cool.

Still, there's been a lack of white lower weight stars since Gatti. He was pretty big. A newer, better marketed fighter could be a bit bigger.

Rios is half native american and half mexican... his mother was full blooded native.. not white..
as for Guerrero, have u seen his father?

don't pretend that Pavlik wasn't a huge star, because he was.. America would love to have a good up and coming white fighter and he'd be super popular, but unfortunately, there aren't many competing..
