Boxing is a poor man's (working class) sport. IMO, a "white fighter" would get a no different following at a higher level than ODLH, Tyson and FMJ(although FMJ following is weird - people hate him more than like him)

Pavlik was no bigger a star than Jermain Taylor was before him. Outside of Youngstown, there was none of the crossover appeal people were expecting. 30 years ago, people probably would've gone nuts for a white American middleweight champ who knocked people out and put on exciting fights. That was then.

Today, that made him just another world-class fighter. The wave of mainstream popularity and attention people were expecting for Pavlik because he fit all the criteria they thought necessary to produce a crossover superstar just didn't happen.

 

Yeah, Italy always gets the special separate group treatment while everyone else (albeit less identifiable) is thrown into one enormous, basic group. Instance, I'm technically of German-Russian descent, not "white american". My 'people' didn't get off the damn boat until the 1920s.

 

Tyson Fury has a big following in the US.

Once he wins the World Heavyweight Title next year, he will be the new white king of boxing in the US, Ireland and Britain.

I respect talent over anything. If it looks like guerrero, smells like guerrero, fights like guerrero, I'll probably respect him the same as I do guerrero regardless of if he's white or black, which is very little

 

If there was a white fighter of huge marketability he would sell thru the roof

look at Holmes vs Cooney, they will get behind anything credible and play the villain for Floyd to rile up sales
