This isn't a topic about who was better before anyone starts. I've just watched the Kevin Kelley fight & people's thoughts during the build up & post fight. Highlighted were all the adverts, sponsors & other endorsements connected to Naz, seemed like everybody wanted a piece of him. There was a massive love/hate thing going on with Naz too which captured the imagination of, and divided the whole world. The build up to me was very Floyd esq due to the sheer magnitude of the fight, and during the post fight commentary they discussed how Kevin Kelley had gotten his biggest payday that night by a long way, which is something which happens with everybody Floyd faces. At his peak, due to interest, popularity, hate, intrigue or sponsorships etc, was Naz bigger than Floyd?
No Floyd is the biggest grossing sports star in the worldAnd has record ppv figures The man is 'big time' Naz was a potential superstar who burnt brightly and then burnt out
More ppl watched the Naz vs Kelly fight than have watched any of floyds fights. Not sure if that makes him 'bigger' though
No Mayweather bigger now than Naz ever was. Naz was massive though, no doubting that. Probably bigger than anyone from the UK below heavyweight, with the possible exception of Hatton has been since
In this country, 99 out of 100 people won't know who Floyd Mayweather is, whereas 99 out of 100 people would've known who Naz was. In the States, Naz had twice as many viewers as Roy Jones Jr.
Mayweather is American and Naz is British so that makes it a redundat argument As for 99percent of people knowing naz that's bull**** There's still probably 5percent of people never heard of David beckham
Would have been unquestionably Britain's biggest ever sports star had he been committed and really pushed on with his career.
Prince Naseem Hamed was more influential and made a bigger impact in boxing, and trecsended the sport through a variety of fans and age groups more so than Floyd Mayweather. When Floyd Mayweather retires nobody will really be getting all nostalgic and longing to see him fight again..? because he is boring. Floyd Mayweather relies on the media to promote his fights and his own image, guys like Mike Tyson, Prince Naseem Hamed did not need endless 24/7 type programs and extra activities to promote their fans. Floyd Mayweather's fans are made up of Hip Hop fans/He has marketed himself to this group, and then just casual fans who conform and follow whatever the media is banging on about. Just because he earns the most money, it does not mean he is the biggest star ever in boxing. If that was the case..? people would not be booing and leaving his fights like they did during his last fight. If Floyd Mayweather lost his next fight, his marketability and net worth in boxing terms would drop massively. Because his whole image is based on being undefeated, Mike Tyson after he lost to Buster Douglas came back..? and was even bigger in the preceding fights after Douglas, Tilman, Steward, Ruddock. I don't know why people keep mentioning money, in 20 years time! what is money worth. In 1974 Muhammad Ali had ****ing governments of African nations, putting their countries money on the line to fund his fights, he had offers from around the world from Asia to ****ing Russia. Did Michael Jackson ever turn up to watch Floyd Mayweather train..? Did Michael Jackson EVER remove his glove in public..? well he did to shake Prince Naseem Hamed hand. Note: There is a video clip online, that i watched where Steve Bunce was describing the story about Michael Jackson turning up to watch Prince Naseem Hamed train in America. When Michael Jackson removed his glove, body guards where confused and panicking because..? It was something never done before by Jackson in public. Steve Bunce was there in attendance, and stated it was a once in a life time moment. Floyd Mayweather always says, Numbers don't lie! ACTIONS DON'T LIE, AND THEY SPEAK EVEN LOUDER! What's ****ing money..? Listen.. Floyd Mayweather is a great athlete, but for me..? He does not have that mystical magic, that guys like Usain Bolt, Aryton Senna, Steve Prefontaine, Elvis, Michael Jackson had! Whatever it is them guys had..? great actors have it, great political leaders had it..? PRINCE NASEEM HAMED HAD IT!
Naz was global megastar for a short while. He was pretty much the face of Adidas on billboards the world over including Time Square NYC. If he hadn't have lost his heart he'd have been fighting Barrera, Morales, Marquez and Pacquiao and the money involved in those fights would have been astronomical because of Naz. He was only 27 when he retired. It's a disgrace he isn't in the IBHOF.
