And I'm stunned that anybody would honestly try to say otherwise. Watch the fights. Look at the resume. One is clearly better than the other.

Just because you were closer to your prime when Oscar was in his, or because you like another fighter a lot who Floyd beat or ended up not fighting, doesn't mean you should be biased. Go for it. But when this thread is viewed 20 years from now, you all will look very, very silly.

 

He called them out but never fought them.

Paul Williams called him out. Prime Cotto called him out. Prime Margarito Called him out. Younger Mosley called him out.

I'm a Floyd fan but I don't think Floyd was fighter of the decade. He didn't fight the entire decade. I have always said Hopkins was fighter of the decade. He didn't get votes because he came off a loss to Calzaghe.

 

"Legacy" is different than ranking. He won't be remembered as the force he would have been otherwise, but the men Tyson beat under the circumstances he did are the only things I can consider when stacking his resume for ranking.

Your post had little to do with the actual breakdown of resume. Oscar has a better handful of single wins against ATG's and Hall of Famers, and just as much depth.

"Looking at the two", I ****ing hate that argument. The eye test is good for comparing eras, and we all use it to judge a fighter, but it's the worst way to decide who's better. Otherwise Linares looks like the second coming of Salvador Sanchez on tape.

 

what makes them even is because oscar choked in some of his big fights.

 

Mayweather has been at WW for 8 years now, and look at how many fights he has had and who he has missed. Say what you want, but he retired instead of taking on 3 legitimate WWs. He missed the biggest fight in history. His fans cry that he is to small for Canelo.

Oscar De La Hoya not only had fought the likes of Whitaker and Chavez Sr, he then moves up in weight and constantly fought the best competition. Trinidad, Vargas, Quartey, and Hopkins. It says something when a shot Oscar is Floyds career defining fight.

Oscar is even more respected now, because fighters these days are mentally weak and more worried about losing then trying to prove they are the best. Whereas Floyd was scared to fight Pacquiao, Oscar who was clearly at the end of his career came down in weight to take on Manny. It says a lot when you don't have to make excuse after excuse like you have to do with Mayweather and could watch someone like Oscar take on everyone.

Everyone brags that Mayweather fought an undefeated Hatton. Oscar took on an undefeated Quartey, Trinidad, Mosley, and then moved way out of his comfort zone and got in the ring with one of the greatest MWs ever. Did he get his ass handed to him by Hopkins? Sure did. Did he hold his own against other greats and prove he was great himself? Only a true hater or a ***** would deny he didn't.

 

That's why you consider who they are fighting.

Problem solved.

 

And in that case DLH has the superior accomplishments.

Vargas isnt making the hof. Neither is Quartey. Macho, Pea and Chavez were well past their best.
