First things first: I'm drunk. Second, I'm a big fan of Toney. His skills and his resume. BUT I think a critical analysis can be done on his resume. not by me. I'm drunk. And this should be done by someone more knowledge by me. Still, he competed in one of the most incredibly rich middleweight and super middleweight eras of all time. So how come he never fought: 1. Julian Jackson 2. Gerald McClellan 3. Nigel Benn 4. Chris Eubank 5. Bernard Hopkins 6. Steve Collins He's considered an ATG. I PROBABLY could find a place for him in my top 100. But he fought in an era was Jackson fought at least one McClellan (and after that...) McClellan fought Jackson and benn, Benn fought McClellan and Eubank, Eubank fought Benn and Collins, and Collins fought anyone who could come near him (not named Joe Calzaghe). Hopkins resume is beyond critique right now. Toney fought none of them. He took out Nunn, who was a monster at the time. He fought the best of the 160/168s of the era in Roy Jones and got shut out. He fought Griffin and lost twice. He did fight McCallum thrice. But in the end, how come he didn't fight ANY of these guys?
I'm not sure, i was too young back then. I know there was talk of him fighting Benn and Eubank back in the early 90's. You've probably already seen it but this video always makes me laugh: [yt]OW3zWZ12ZZY[/yt] As for what would have happened, it's difficult to be certain because of Toney's inconsistency but i think he could have beaten all of them. At his best, i think he stops Benn and Jackson, gets a late stoppage over McClellan, wins clear decisions over Eubank and Collins and gets a close decision over Hopkins. I'm a big fan of his though, so i'm probably a bit biased.
Julian Jackson has always been a mystery to me as well..would have been a great fight!...All those guys went to war!:hop:hop:hop:cannabis:cannabis:cannabis
i just watched this round table thing and eubank said it was suicide to fight Toney and Roy Jones http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBw_q1rCa40
Hopkins and Toney were going to fight in 2003 (I think), but Hopkins fought De la Hoya instead (according to Toney).
Is Toney an ATG? I don't see that too clear, but he is close. He looked so flat against Jones in his most important fight. HOF he will probably make, but it matters who else is up for election that year.
There's few fighters so utterly bad for Julian Jackson as Toney is. Keen eye, hell of a chin, counters well.
Love that ****ing clip. And I agree to an extent that he COULD have beaten all of them. But you're bang on: he was inconsistent. The **** that he was that brilliant but did not fight the best in SUCH a great era is mind boggling to me. Still, I feel he takes Jackson in a masterpiece, gets outworked by benn and Collins. McClellan is a toss off but i'll take Toney in a war (if McClellan can fight the full 12). Hopkins I'm not smart enough to predict
yeah, ring covered it. I think it was right before or after his fighter of the year award. Would have been a great time for it honestly
He also fought Iran the Blade Barkley who still had a lot left, stopped Light heavyweight champion Prince Charles Williams and Roy Jones Jnr. None of Collins, Eubank or Benn particularly wanted to get in there with him because theywould certainly have lost and brutally. For some reason he actually hated the English and British. I know Collins is Irish but the distinction won't have bothered Toney. Julian Jackson had been eliminated by Toney's mate Gerald McClellan. Toney and McClellan would have fought had the tragedy not occurred. Hell they had sparred enough times and their is footage of it. Toney always felt that as good as the G-Man was he was much better. Emmanuel Steward Gerald McClellan former trainer and manager said he was such a big fan of Toney that it became a problem between him and Gerald. Toney hates Hopkins with a passion and felt he only came out of his shell at Middleweight after he, Roy Jones, Mclellan, Nunn, McCallum left the middleweight division and fought a lot of bums. I am not saying that is correct either just saying what Toney feels. We must never forget he won the Cruiserweight world title against best Cruiserweight in the world Jirov, knocked out Evander Holyfield, went the distance twice with Sam Peters former heavyweight world champion and defeated Johnny Ruiz for heavyweight championship of the world.
good and balanced post :thumbsup but I can't help but feel that his reputation and legacy is based on his skills and we assume he would have dominated or at least won fights that didn't happen. just a shame because like roy jones he potentially could have had an all time great resume if things had come together differently
