well, you have to look a little closer to the guys that Holmes overcame, one of them were Shavers, who had a history of being overcome after having his opponent down or hurt, Mercado,Cobb, and those fights were just 6 and 9 months after Holmes also Lyle,Stander and that does not include the guys that just strait out Knock Shavers out or dominated him like Quarry and the 20-25 -0 Bob Stalling As far as Snipes, he was dropped 2x and dominated by Coetzee but gifted the win so King could get him and not Coetzee the shot, it almost backfired on Holmes but from the Holmes fight on Snipes only won 1 fight out of 7 strait fights so lets not get carried away with how great a win it was...It was 22 fight Snipes who was just dominated by Gerrie Coetzee and although stole that win had only one win in his next 7 fights Kevin Issac had Holmes down but it was Kevin 2nd fight and Larry's 7th so not much credence there
The idea is that Holmes was hit by ko punches. That right from Shavers was titanic as was that right by Snipes. When he was met with adversity he came back and won. Add to this the great fight Weaver gave Larry hurting him badly several times before being stopped This is a mark of an all time great champion. On the other side of the coin you have Wlad who was brutally koed three times falling to the canvas in sections. To be fair Lewis being koed twice by single shots is also a significant black mark against his all time ranking. On the plus side he came back in return bouts with both to completely dominate which is a huge plus.
Something like this isnt even worth gettin worked up over..Wlad isnt and never will be half the man Holmes was in the ring...Larry was way to busy for Wlad and there is no way he would be able to deal with larrys jab and constant combinations Holmes KO inside of 7 or 8.
actually i pick wladimir here... wladimir is much bigger, stronger, harder puncher, holmes in his peak weighed 209 pounds, and he would not fast enough on his feet (ali would be fast enough) to avoid wlad during all the fight, i doubt that holmes was much faster than haye, i think that larry would put here a tough fight but he loses by sd. he fought a war against a boxer puncher like spoon... larry would get cocky and he would trade blows with wlad and he would get hurt.
It`s actually fair to say that a prime time Larry Holmes, could match up well with any ATG at heavy... Witout a doubt, the best jab in heavyweight history. And that is exactly how he would control the tempo of the fight ! He would shoot it upstairs and downstairs and mix in his lateral movement. Vlad, for all his skills ans size would look like a rambling buffalo aginst Holmes quick hands and feet.Seriously there is zero comparison in speed between the two. And, I can`t see Vlad outboxing Holmes and he sure as hell isn`t stopping him. It`s a good, tough close fight, but it`s Holmes fight ... 12 UD or 14 rd tko
When has Wlad ever been in a competative match-up? They are mostly one sided affairs against bottom feeders with no ambition to win. Pater brought the attack and had him downed 3 times and running away for his life. If he was half the fighter Homles was , he would of surley got him out of there. The other competative fights he was invloved in left him with ko loses. He's not built mentally for tuff fights. He dominates or he loses.
...with the exception of the "No balls Lewis Era" of the late 90's/early 2000's, the Klitschkos have reigned over the weakest Era in heavyweight history.
Not that I'm picking Waldo here, but please give me your assessment of these fine challengers... Alfredo Evangelista Ossie Ocasio A 19-8 Mike Weaver A 1979 Earnie Shavers Lorenzo Zanon Leroy Jones Scott LeDoux A Parkinson's Ali 1981 Leon "Coetzee Already Blew Me Out" Spinks Gerry "I never came close to winning an important fight again" Cooney Tex Bocc Lucien Rodiquez Scott Frank Marvis Frazie I give credit for a young Renaldo Snipes and a very green but disappointing Witherspoon. Still, that's some weak **** right there and very easy to argue it is worse than Waldo's ledger.
Not really sure what you're getting at? The Klitchskos and Lewis ruled over the weakest era in heavyweight history. The late 70's/early 80's were pretty bad too, but 98-present is weaker.
