Sonny Liston vs Lennox Lewis

Yes, I know Lennox lost to Rahman and McCall but keep in mind that a sharp and focused Lewis made easy work of Rahman in the rematch. His kayo of Rahman was breathtaking and he dominated McCall although no one kayos the Atomic Bull. I think Lewis is probably the most physically gifted jumbo sized heavyweight ever. Liston is ever dangerous of course but would be physically overmatched by a larger, stronger, more athletically gifted fighter.

lewis had problem with jabbers.plus he didn't have the footwork to keep liston at bay plus his jab wouldn't be a factor because liston had a better one.

 

Lennox Lewis wins this fight. I see him winning a Decision. Liston has the power to hurt lennox but he would have to catch him with the perfect punch, knowing the oppenent Lennox would be careful and not get knocked out and win the fight.

Liston would be hyped up like any boxer with a big punch, so Lewis would take him very seriously.

That spells lights out for Liston who was not difficult to intimidate.

 

I'm going with Lennox Lewis in this one, probably by a late stoppage...after surviving an early scare.

 

Lewis would fight a careful fight for a minute or two and then take him out in 1 or 2 or 3.

Hell, bean pole Cassius Clay scared him.

 

Lewis has no reach advantage, an inferior jab, and a lesser chin. Lewis gets carried out in a stretcher.

 

Rahman would've got destroyed in the 60's and 70's. He literally would've barely qualified as a sparring partner for most ranked heavyweights at that time.

 

Rahman would've had a 20-50 pound weight advantage over almost any HW of the '60s (including Liston). Fighters who weighed 215-220 pounds were considered "big" for that era - how do you think 230-240 pound Rahman would've been viewed?

185-pound Floyd Patterson could barely handle punchers who weighed under 200 pounds, and avoided punchers who weighed even around 210-215 pounds (i.e. Nino Valdes, Cleveland Williams) - what do you think he'd do with a puncher who weighed 230-240 pounds? And he was the HW champ of the world!

 

How can you say with certainty that he has a lesser chin? His chin has withstood punches from fighters who weighed nearly 250 pounds (Vitaly, Tua) and even the two fighters who KO'd him weighed 230-plus pounds.

Liston's chin was typically tested against fighters who weighed only 180-220 pounds - and out of that, he was hurt by a young Ali, flattened by 200-pound fringe contender Leotis Martin, and reportedly also dropped by LHW Marty Marshall.
