Best jab In British boxing

  1. Gavin Rees maybe despite being short for a lightweight and a light welter before that,he manages to make his jab a vital part of his offense
He also throws it with intent as does Kell brook

I'm well aware the jab wasn't working against Gonzalez Craney, but it eventually got working in round 7 and that's when Ricky started getting success.
You should judge Ricky's jab on the Katsitas,Moses and Mitchell fights class class jab very hard to get past

Yep Froch used that long reach with the jab to good effect on Saturday but dropped off with the discipline in using it; but then Kessler is a quality fighter to keep at the end of jab for 12 rounds. Seems to be open season on Froch Calz comparisons at the mo and Kessler's left eye after the Calz fight showed how effective a disciplined jab can be.

You can't dismiss someone's jab based on 1 fight craney, where was Froch's jab against taylor or when he couldn't get close to Dirrell?

That's the thing with ESB everyone has short memories.

I'm a fan of both fighters but you need to be consistent.

I've read it again don't worry, your claiming it's not as good because he couldn't get close to Gonzalez :nut

So where was Froch's jab in those fights? You claim it's the most effective and I'm not doubting it, but how come he couldn't utilize it in those fights? Taking into account you accuse burns of not being able to get close to Gonzalez in that 1 fight.

For me a jab is rated on its effectiveness. Not its flashiness or how great it looks. But how it controls the fight and how it can be used to build of for other punches. Carl Froch does not have the fastest hands or elite skills, but he is effective with what he has got and he is a smart fighter. He struggles to land the jab in some fights, but my point is that he tries to use it as a tool, Froch has improved since the first Kessler fight, and he shocked me on Saturday how good the jab was for most of the fight.

Ricky's got a fantastic jab, but it needs to be effective against a range of styles. You cant pick and chose opponents for it to work, you have to adapt. The layoff may have played a part in his lack of being able to land it and other punches in the Gonzalez fight. But Gonzalez was also making Ricky miss by making that little half step backwards and making the slightest of head movements. Gonzalez knew what he was doing, obviously.

Ricky struggled to work that out until Gonzalez started slowing down. Then he started connecting and making punches count.

We'll have to wait and see in the next fight. But I can't see Ricky repeating the same mistakes. Billy will make sure he learns from them. Ricky should be a different animal in the next fight. He needed the rounds and a living breathing real fight to get back up to speed.

You just cannot replicate it in the gym. You can get it close, but not 100%. Like in football, there is a difference between being fit and match fit, sharp and match sharp.

David Haye, when he decides to use it.

    End of thread.

  10. Really

David haye could be described as being the best finisher in Britain and most powerful puncher but they are his biggest assets not his jab which I understand is good especially when competing against taller opponents

The likes of burns, barker, rees and cleverly dominate fights off their jab and that for me is the deciding factor

He took away Wladimir Kiltschko's jab away from him for 1 round when they fought. And then stopped using his jab! Adam Booth refereed to this round after the fight.

When you can out jab at 6"6 athletic super heavyweight! That's all the proof i need.

You do realise how much you're contradicting yourself right now don't you?

If you were shocked with how good Froch's jab was on Saturday you couldn't have watched him against Abraham then.

Ricky does have a fantastic jab, so does Froch when he uses it. My point being here is you've said Burns has to learn to adapt and land his jabs on different styles, which is fine, he struggled in 1 fight to find the range.

Does the same thing not count for Froch? he couldn't land a jab for the 1st 6/7 rounds against Taylor, he couldn't adapt to dirrell. he didn't have control of it against Ward.

If your going to claim it's the best jab in britain, it should be backed up with a valid argument.

Froch's is effective, but much like everything with him, it surprises you that it is, because watching it you wouldn't say it's anything special. It probably works because of where he throws it from. He holds his hands so low that you wouldn't easily see it coming. Something other fighters couldn't get away with because they don't have his chin to get away with low hands. His reach probably helps too.

It was a good job it was better on Saturday too, as watch the first Kessler fight again... Froch's jab was pretty weak for the first half. He was pawing away rather than throwing anything with intent. They're the rounds that cost him the fight.

Groves' is technically better. True it hasn't been tested against the best yet, but I love the way he mixes is up. You don't see many throw triple jabs going head, body, head like he does and they're all hurtful too. Given his doesn't rely on other gifts to make it work (chin and reach) I'd give best jab to Groves. Haye made an interesting commentary on Saturday too about how little 'tell' there is in Groves' jab. You just don't get any sign it's coming before it hits you.
