he destroyed maskaev(who was pretty good at that time).he also fought ruiz but got DQ because of low blows..
I am from about 10-15 miles away where Kirk Grew up and my nephew's dad were childhood friends and are like 2nd cousins or something like that. I remember my dad and I talking about Kirk when he was coming up (he boxed out of a gym i never set foot in) . . . he had such great potential. I thought he could have been a lot better than he was but he left Texas (where he went to turn pro) and returned home before the Vitali fight. I happen to be in a restaurant with my kids mother close to his community and he walked in. He looked like he was about 400lbs, breathing heavy and sweating. Everybody was saying "looking good champ!" "bring that belt back home champ!""you are gonna kill him champ!" he looked the worse I ever saw him before. I remember seeing Trevor Berbick 6 weeks before the Tyson fight and the guy was a rock, this was like a month before Klitschko and he look like he was gonna have a heart attack. My point is, he started to believe his own hype and lost his hunger for the game. When everyone is telling you how great you are and look (and the Idolized him) its hard o stay focused. Sadly, Kirk was just another wasted talent in the HW division
he wasnt a fantastic fighter in any era . . . and he happened to fight vittles for the title after LL retired
yeah, wasted talent like J said.. I still remember when he came out of shapd against vitali. We all were wondering what was that all about.. about ruiz fight, not shitting on kirk but i think ruiz was getting better of him.. Need to watch that fight again looong time since last time.
