British Fighters Being Moved Too Quickly

Some fair points.

With Price it was a decent match up with Thompson a 41 year old that has ring craft but no real power.The shot he went down to would be the worry for me not the level of opponent.

It's all about opinions & Fury I would like to see do well entertainment value alone but for me you could give him as much time as you want Haye imo would stop Fury.

 

its not a case of being moved to quickly, more not being moved smartly.

He could have done everything he had done in 5 fights. There was absolutely no reason for him to fight 9 bums and then fight Dallas, Skelton, Harrison and McDonught.

Look at the 2 most successful British fighters in recent years. Haye & Froch. Thats how you progress a fighter towards world level. You progressively step up the competition and fight different styles.

The biggest thing that hampers a British fighters progress is this ridiclious "winning the British title outright" BS. If you are a Brian Rose and you still need fights at British level, then great. But if your a potential world champ like Lee Selby don't let your career stagnate by fighting lower level opponents than you have already beaten.

I think Fury been handled much better and is 6 years younger too.

Would you be up for assessing Fury's opposition in the same way as above for a comparison?

The step up from the likes of Sexton to Thompson is ****ing huge.

Thompson isn't brilliant but he's a canny operator who'd upset anyone not on their mettle not named Klitschko. An ideal trial horse basically.

Price should have stepped up earlier from Latvian cab drivers to allow a couple of bridging fights between domestic class and the likes of Tony Thompson.

Even a fight against Sprott would be worthwhile, on the express condition that Sprott weights 240 or less and actually tries. Pounds for punches, perhaps.... given that Sprott can mess a guy about for ten rounds and probably one-shot Price if he landed a biggie.

Fury is different to Price because Fury turned pro at 19 with nowhere near the international pedigree that Price had.

Only three of his career fights would I class as pointless exercises. 2 of the bums he faced in early fights and Martin Rogan.

 

It was a jump up in class Thompson is ring savvy again the worry has to be the shot he goes down to if Thompson is exposing him every top 20 heavyweight with any decent power will be willing to go in for a decent payday.All with a real chance of doing the same we are not talking about the kind of shot Lewis got caught with by Rahman as an example of a british heavy coming back from a stoppage.

No secret Price is a very powerful heavyweight but his chin was exposed in the am's and any length of development you will be found out then some in the pro's.You can't do much if especially at heavyweight if you can't take a decent shot.

 

What about Amir Khan, many people are calling him shot at the tender age of 26 (he's 9 years younger then Froch!).

I think they're doing the right thing at the moment by taking him down a level and developing his skills at a steady pace and matching him right.

 

Was saying a few weeks ago that when Joshua turns pro he should fight Sprott in an 8 rounder within a year of turning pro.

Pulev beat Matt Skelton in his 5th fight. Why the **** would an Olympic medalist be fighting him in his 15th fight, 3 1/2 years after turning pro for the British title!

Age is irrelevant to whether a fight is shot or not. But I don't think Khan is shot, I think his punch resistance at 140lbs is gone and he has shown an inability to adapt as a fighter and learn from experience.

Khan literally got exposed by Lamont Peterson. They showed the world how to beat Khan. Garcia put that into practice and so did Diaz but he didn't have the ability to do it.

 

Good post. Fans, Promoters and Fighters themselves all seem to be in too much of a rush these days to get to World level and by taking these shortcuts, you don't get a fighter developing in the way they should. It's the main reason IMO that we don't get as many fighters at the top of their divisions as we should, with a few notable exceptions

Haye got battered by Carl Thompson early on and Froch was fed a steady bunch of domestic level fodder for 5 years prior to him fighting Pascal.

 

The Thompson fight was a blip in Hayes record no doubt but how did it effect his career in the long term? He learned more from that fight than David Price did in his first 10 fights put together.

Up to the Thompson fight Haye was matched well. After the Thompson loss he faced a bum to get his confidence back then 3 International opponents before he challenged for the European title. Defended it 4 times against good opponents that gave him tests. Then he faced Mormeck for the world title.

Froch faced his journeyman but he got through them quickly before getting to title level. English, Commonwealth, British. He held onto those titles for a long time but he was fighting decent opponents. Hague, Barney, Magee, Dodson & Ried is a quality British title run. Then he faced 2 gatekeeper fighters before the Pascal shot.

Price went from Sexton > Skelton & Harrison > Thompson > Thompson

Froch went from Adamu > Woolnugh, Hague, Porras, Barney, Magee, Dodson, Reid > Tatetoyeon

Haye went from the Thompson loss to fight Delaney, Kelly, Rossitto, Gurov, Johaneson, Abdoul then to Fragomeni

So both Froch & Haye have faced 7-8 decent opponents before there acid test. Price has faced Sam Sexton!!

 

Think Prices jump from his last man to Thompson was too big,partly because the boxing media was hailing him as the next world champ.Should have had 3 fights in between,against decent Americans/Europeans,maybe one against a clever southpaw.Hindsights good though.Still think hell win the return.
Groves a different story.Few years younger.I think they're doing OK if they keep him active and step it up a bit.But no Froch,no Kessler,no Steiglitz in Germany.YET.
Kell Brook.If the Jones fight happens,and as expected he wins,step him up.Not Diaz.MIKE Jones,then maybe Bailey.Shot in 2014.Cant see it though.Just my thoughts.
