How much would that bump his ATG status,as he is much maligned on this site? For those that dont have him in ATG status, would this win get your ATG acknowledgement? I would personally think it would be amazing.
It would be incredibly impressive for sure, but it would still be tough ranking him due to a very weak resume. I'll go out on a limb and say between 75 and 100. There are so many impressive fighters in history though with much better resumes. That said, Zags was a damn good fighter. Its a shame he didn't go after better comp earlier in his career though so we could truly evaluate just how great he may have been.
His Eubanks, Kessler, and Hopkins victories are excellent, but he gets a bunch of names by beating Ward in one fight. Escalates him significantly IMO
Would be a huge win in my opinion. Calzaghe's legacy simply does not match his undefeated record and length of reign. He wasted his prime taking the easy route and fighting unknowns undeserving of a title shot and fighters recently beaten by his big rival Ottke. I think Calzaghe was a much better fighter than his record suggests but he never had the belief to maximise his potential. To come back in his 40's have not fought for over 4 years and beat one of the top pound for pound fighters would be massive for his legacy. He's not top 100 at the moment but he would definitely be if he beat Ward. Though I don't think Calzaghe could beat Ward. I think he would have had his hands full in his prime, though probably would have won but now he won't be the same fighter he was and Ward is only getting better with each fight, better he stay retired.
He's already great and a win over Ward would be the best of his career. His successful out-of-retirement bid would be the golden standard for coming back, along with a few others like Foreman. He runs the risk of getting Hatton'd or Jeffries'd.
Only Kessler was prime. The Eubank victory is on the lower end of the spectrum, even though Eubank was a better fighter than kessler, but at the time of the fight he had already slipped a good deal, and was at the end of his career. Hopkins, although a genetic freak, was past prime, but still able even though he was 42. It wouldve been better if he fought Hops when he was prime. But its his best win by far... that version of Hops was better than Kessler... although arguments can be made that kessler win is better, but the fact that Hops was still world class and a ATG... and Kessler's career really hasn't been too stellar after he got his ass whopped by calzaghe... his only highlight was eeking out a victory over Froch -- who he loss the rematch too, and was completely dismantled by Ward. If calzaghe came out of retirement and beat Ward, my o my, that would be SOME victory. Ward has beaten everyone, beat kessler far better. Beating a guy that good, would mean a lot. And its not like calzaghe has anything to lose by fighting him, if he loses, he has a legitimate excuse.... if he wins, he only receives the spoils and accolades of victory.
12 idiots voted top 25:roflatsch Hagler, Leonard, Pac, Floyd, JMM, Morales, RJJ, LEwis, Wlad, Whitaker, JCCsr, Chavez sr, DUran, ALi, Foreman, Holmes, Monzon, Holyfield, SRR, Hearns, Greb, Salvador Sancez, W Gomez, Willie Pep etc...here it is 20 plus fighter in a minute time that he can ever surpass, damn Calzaghetards:tired
Would be a ridiculous feat. Ward is not only better than him now but better than him when he was in his prime. So for Calazaghe to come back now and beat him, it would be epic beyond belief.
