I've been watching a few Klitchko fights lately and I find myself wondering why they never mix up their attack and go to the body especially when their opponent is covering up their head exclusively. It would seem to me to be the perfect time to hook to the body, the high guard might obscure their vision so they don't it coming. I often see it written that it's bad for the taller fighter to bend down, why is that? Are punches coming from above more damaging? I also wonder why taller fighters don't use a lot of stationary movement, ie combining upperbody movement with bending their knees. I would have thought being taller would mean they could really alter their position quite significantly not just to be harder to hit but to confuse the opponent as to where the next punch is coming from. Obviously there must be reasons why sort of thing isn't done, I've not yet been in the ring so I don't know from first hand experience.
I forgot to say as well that surely when you stand tall you sacrifice a little of your reach cause the punch is traveling diagonally rather than if you bent your knees so your shoulder was in line with the opponents' head?
You can bend you knees and go to the body, but you have to be careful about Falling off balance when leaning to the side - especially if you are really tall and a bit of a beanpole. It's just easier to keep balance for shorter, stockier guys. It's like in soccer; most of the tricky, twisting, turning dribbling, wizards are midgets. There have been big guys who could do it, though, Riddick Bowe springs to mind.
Just to clarify, do you mean tall, rangy guys? Or are fighters now being subject to pre-fight taste checks - perhaps by the ring girls?:hey
Leo Santa Cruz Jesus Soto Karass Riddick Bowe Vassiliy Jirov Paul Williams All tall (or at least over average height) for their division, all rip the body well. I'm sure there are lots more, but that is all that pops into my head before coffee. :!:
if u have a good jab it sets up everything, if u tall and rangy establish the jab u can do anything. jab then turn ur hips left hooks to the body. perfect example is tommy hearns. he whip that body shot in there so hard. n thats a tall rangy fighter
It's doable. Klitschko brothers aren't the typical rangy fighters. Arguello, Mosley, Mayweather,Whitaker, Leonard, Benitez, Cervantes, all fought well maximizing their range but still managed to get to the body and make use of changing levels in general.
McCallum himself enjoyed a couple inches advantage in both height and reach over most of his opponents at his prime weight, come to recollect. :think Of course he was a bit more filled out and not quite rangy the way you think of a PTP or Hitman.
Absolutely right, I'm mad at myself for not thinking of him. :good It wasn't the focal point of his game, but Hearns could whack downstairs.
Vitali mixes up every now and then, Morales was quite tall at 122 and threw some nasty ones, as did Caballero and Guzman. Bute is another rangy fighter going to the body.
