    That was highway ****ing robbery.

There wasn't a lot of future in a featherfisted Sunday School teacher, tho. The decision followed the money.

Pretty sure it was an afternoon fight, not at night, as it was a weekender daytime scrap on ABC, I believe.

    But, yeah, definite robbery.

Tiberi shouldn't have quit, however. He would have gotten another shot at Toney or probably a spot in a fight for the vacant title.

I agree I guess he just got disgusted with the politics of the sport and being a Sunday school teacher must have wanted to shy away from the corruption that existed back then ....good thing its gone Ha Ha

Tiberi was very unlucky, I think most thought he deserved to win.

But there came a point where Tiberi needed to 'get over it'. Accept the good money he rightly deserved for a rematch, and fight. Or go thanks boxing, but no more. He did seem to go on about it, and after a while people just lost interest.

People know boxing can be corrupt, Dave, you were hardly the first to be wrong-ed, and you were not the last either...

damn i just watched this fight yesterday. Toney didn't do ****, he put his back to the ropes and slipped ducked bobbing and weaving throwing the occasional single shots and tiberi outworked him I too thought just for a moment hurt Toney to the body. Toney was 100x the fighter tiberi was but it was just one of those rare occurrences the announcers compared it to Tyson-Douglas but they said YOU COULDN'T EVEN PLACE A BET ON TIBERI forget long odds there was NO odds lol

Just watched it. Most horrendous robbery I've ever seen. Rd 1 was the only round Toney clearly won (well, perhaps rd 6 counting the BS deduction). Couldn't give Toney more than three rds tops. Amazing that the judges had the gall to give him that fight.

Toney was clearly in horrible shape, but Tiberi fought a smart and extremely determined fight.

Toney was drained at 160lbs and the woman who was his manager kept pressuring Toney to fight at that weight. She doesn't care about Toney at all or his health, only the money wow.

I have never seen the fight. After an subsequent controversial fight, it was some years later and I think it was Mosley/DLH 2, one of the magazines spoke to a boxing guy (I think it was Emmanuel Stewart, though I don't know that) and he referenced the Toney/Tiberi fight. He was at ringside and thought Toney won; in fact, he was suprised that Tiberi lasted the distance, he said. He couldn't believe that there was controversy, so he watched a tape and thought it was a different fight.
If I recall, Tiberi turned down an immediate rematch because he would not be "medically ready" in time.

Whereas Toney clearly cares about his health. He'd have been 300 pounds back then if someone hadn't practically dragged him to the gym and to do roadwork. He moved up to SM and still had to drain to make weight. If he'd have not put on 30-40 pounds or more between fights, he wouldn't have been so weakened from draining -- look at him, it's not like he's a naturally heavyweight frame sweating off pounds to make middle.

Good to hear Tiberi's doing well. I wish he would have used the robbery for motivation, but, hey, it's his life to do with what he will and if he's happy then I'm happy for him.

I just watched the fight- for the first time- without the sound, without Wallau screaming, and it was anything but a robbery. Tiberi threw a ton of punches, and landed more on Toney than much better fighters did, but he took some very hard, clean punches as well.
