True regarding Walcott, although Rocky was having a very hard time seeing throughout a large portion of that fight.... for whatever reason. If you need a reminder, Rocky stopped him in the first round of their rematch.

As you said, it took half the fight for the Rock to knock Louis through the ropes. That likely would have hapenned much sooner had the Rock actually wanted to hit the guy.

Ezzard had ALS  Do you remember how fast the Rock starched Ezzard once his nose got split open in the second fight? Had that have happened in the first, Ezzard would not have had a full 15 rounds to his credit agianst Marciano.

They might stop the first Tunney fight today and if the two Tunney fights were scheduled for 15, Dempsey probably would have been stopped, at least by TKO's. Dempsey viewed it that way in his 1959 autobiography. He admitted he was grateful they were 10 round fights.
At the end of the first Tunney fight, Dempsey's eyes were so badly swollen he had to be led across the ring to congratulate Tunney.

I do think the Charles nose thing was a freaky injury that was not likely to be repeated.

I pick Marciano in this one.

Were Dempsey available for comment on this forum, I doubt he would disagree.

Intriguing matchup. Lets look at a few things:

    1) Dempsey was great against larger lumbering fighters
    2) Marciano did cut
    3) Both possessed ko power, tho Dempsey was faster
    4) Marciano seemed to have the edge in stamina

Either Dempsey comes out and batters Marciano early to a
stoppage win or Rocky survives to come back and KO
Jack. Can't decide on this one!!!

I dont buy the brink and Dempsey wont cut. Tunney cut Dempsey over the eyes in BOTH fights.

Dempsey of couse was much worse in the first bout. But Dempsey got cut over the eyes in the rematch.

I'm only talking about what Dempsey said himself. If you want to call him (Dempsey) an idiot... well, the ball is in your court.

Why do I feel the need to write parenthetically with some... :patsch Perhaps because if I really talked with them they'd have no clue as to what I'm talking about

Dempsey was merely facing superior opposition when he faced Tunney. This may have been due to an extended period of inactivity, as much as anything else, on Dempsey's part -who is to say. About the only thing we know for certain is that Dempsey lost, miserably.

This is one matchup, classical matchup that is, that I've never been able to answer. To save my life I can't pick a winner.

I honestly don't understand people saying that if Marciano survives early he'll come back and win late. Do you think Dempsey stops punching after four rounds? I also don't buy the "Marciano wears Dempsey down" argument, as Dempsey was just as durable and had just as much will as Marciano. And what do you think Dempsey's going to be doing while he's being "worn down"?

Let's look at the facts of Dempsey's fuel tank:

Dempsey was a measured fighter with a high output, just as Marciano was, but his output was different; circled movement, with jabbing and explosive charges in comparison to Marciano's steadily released style of advancing slithering and clubbing.

-The only real time Dempsey was truly winded was when he did everything he could to win his bet on beating Willard in the first round, putting absolutely everything into his excited punches.

Tyson was guilty of putting too much into his punches before properly setting up, moreso later in his career, but that is what winded him - Dempsey would tackle Marciano with a smart mind and make his efforts count.

On the flip side, it would be interesting to see how and if Marciano could dig his way out of the kind of hole Dempsey could bury him in during the early goings - Dempsey could damage The Rock beyond repair...

I think Mariciano would eventually wear Dempsey down for a late stoppage. TKO10. :good

Dempsey to me hit harder, faced better punchers, and was faster with hands and his feet. I will go with Dempsey to win for these reasons. I also feel if it came down to points, Dempsey would win more rounds.

I would not write Rocky off though.
