The night Toney got beat and Dave got robbed

I know punch stats aren't everything and can be misleading when they are a bit close but Tiberi outlanded Toney 439 to 160.

439 to 160.

 

I didn't look at the punch stat numbers. I watched the fight and I saw a lot of punches getting caught on gloves or being deflected and then glancing. I've always had a problem with punch stat numbers because I don't know their criteria for 'landed' punches. Cleanly landed? No way he landed 439 punches. And no way Toney only landed 160.
But I don't know what they count as landed, and, at any rate, the pro game isn't about counting punches- that is amateur boxing. Tiberi fought his ass off, and it was a close fight, from what I saw, and he took some real hard blows. No robbery.

 

I get you on the punch stats. But numbers this lopsided are in fact indicative of what occurred. And the punch stat folks do have a better view, and don't have a commentator in their ears. And no, Toney did not catch 300 punches on his gloves. And yes, Tiberi rocked Toney on numerous occasions.

 

It was a decisive victory for Tiberi, no two ways about it. I remember it then and I watched it again, Dave outworked him clearly

 

Honestly, I thought that Toney fell back into the ropes far too often...but rocked, I disagree. If you mean 'hurt' by a punch, then, no. If you mean rocked back because a guy was relentlessly pushing forward, then, yes.
Maybe I've heard of this fight being a horrible robbery for so long that I expected more, but I don't think it was a robbery. A close fight that shouldn't have been close, certainly. And I was a big Tiberi fan, watched him fight on ESPN many times back in those days, and he always put on a show, fought his ass off.
And,no, Tiberi did not land 439 clean punches, though it certainly wasn't for lack of trying.

 

I'll look at it again some time soon but I remember Toney being legitimately hurt in the 2nd (?) and then once after. Been a long time since I've seen it.

 

I'm a huge Toney fan and I think Dave won wide. The gulf in class was readily apparent but Toney had nothing. I recall that after they called time Toney came on briefly before gassing again.

 

Tiberi also dictated the pace of the fight - which swung close rounds in his favour IMO. Not that there were many.

Toney was smart and flurried late in several rounds. That can deceive some, but even then I can't see how this would be close.

 

He was hurt at one point that I remember. I also think Tiberi's body work took its toll.

 

Just watched the first 4 rounds. He was definitely hurt towards the end of the third. Jesus Christ, Tiberi was laying some body work on Toney. And I believe Tiberi lands 400 punches on Toney... and that 350 of them are to the body.

 

I'm glad Tiberi turned his back on this disgraceful, outrageously corrupt so-called sport. He didn't need that nonsense. Plus he owns Toney's soul forever.

 

toney said in an interview about a year ago that he might have lost when listing the only people who have beaten him

 

The art of body punching is lost to a degree but its funny guys with good chins sometimes are susceptible to the body. I think James learned that lesson here because later on he used a body attack to stop the solid chinned Evander at Heavyweight.

Toney was in decent shape here but the quick body shots and pace drained him, he lost this one clearly and wide
