Discuss. Both are chess players, both don't really engage in high action bouts. Both are slick men. Both are master class fighters. Apparent from the Hagler fight. Using pivots/footwork to get out of trouble.
Wow. And fyi, Floyd pivots out to escape the pocket, but is mostly linear with his offense and defense. Leonard could control the center of a ring and initiate lateral attacks in a way Floyd never has.
That's not true. He was moving very laterally in the later stages of the Hatton fight. And he was mixing up his attacks and attacking laterally in the Jesus/Corrales fights. He just doesnt' need to do this anymore against the guys today.
But he doesn't throw on the move. He skips along the perimeter and rarely pivots to the side. Watch the Lalonde fight for real control of the center through offensive and defensive lateral movement. In any case, the far bigger flaw with your post is that you suggest Leonard "didn't really engage in high action fights", when he often beat master boxers by biting down and committing to knocking them out, such as Hearns and Benitez, and was in possibly the most highly-skilled all out war caught on tape in the Brawl in Montreal. Not to mention stepping on the gas to stop Mayweather Sr., Lalonde, Kalule, and a host of other fighters. And the fact you mention the Hagler fight makes it obvious you haven't seen the man fight all that much and are making another trollish attempt to portray Floyd in the best historical light possible.
We'd know that if he fought and matched wits against a natural welterweight with the skills and IQ of Benitez or Hearns. But he didn't. Leonard did though. Oh well!
He did throw on the move, in many of his earlier fights at 130-140. Especially in the Gatti fight, if you watched it. And I've seen Hagler/Leonard fight a bunch, there's no way you can see Leonard is a high action fighter. He's good at exposing his opponents' weaknesses with his offensive arsenal, pivoting, lateral movements, crisp punches BUT... Those two will do that when their opponent's are wearing down in the fight, they will then proceed to pick up the pace/unload from there. He's very similar to Mayweather. Mayweather is very offensive in SPURTS. But not a great deal in a fight. Only when he sees the perfect opportunity will he do it.
Floyd was better at punching on the move at 130, but it's not how he's fought for most of his career. He didn't laterally attack Gatti, he just stood right in front of him and beat him down. And how about the rest of the Leonard fights I mentioned? That's what I thought. The best you can do is vaguely articulate the notion that both men become more offensive when their opponents wear down, which applies to most fighters. They share some similarities, but are not "very similar". Least of all in the sense that Floyd was not an action fighter. Leonard was not always a thrilling aggressor, but much more of a destructive offensive force than Mayweather ever was.
I don't think you watched the Gatti fight. Because if you did, you would know he was attacking from every angle you can think of. Very apparent from rounds 4-5 and to some degree 6. So no he wasn't just standing in front of him rofl. It may have seemed that way because he landed several loud heavy shots standing in front of him moving lineally. And Leonard was really only this destructive offensive force at 147, similar to Mayweather at 130. When he moved up in weight, he became more cautious, played more of a chess game. Even in the Kevin Howard/Kalule fights which you mentioned, he was never this "Amazingly destructive offensive force." He beat his opponents to the punch, fought cautiously from the outside. And only moved in for the kill at the middle-late rounds. Similar to what Mayweather did against Hatton
How is he afraid? He just doesn't have to do it. Wtf was he doing at the beginning of round 4 against Ortiz? atsch Round 8 vs Hatton
if Floyd had great power, he'd be considered one of the most exciting fighters in the game today. FACT.
Floyd and SRL fight nothing alike. Yes, even during the aggressive days of Mayweather and during the more thinking days of SRL. The only people who needs an explanation for this are certified huggers of either.
