Jones was a shell in 2008, just like he is now. His last notable win was in 2003 and he hardly had an easy time with Tarver after coming back down from heavyweight. Just a year after losing to Calzaghe he was KO'd in round 1 by Danny Fûcking Green.

The faded Eubank he fought possessed more of a challenge than Roy did.

Hopkins went on to school Pavlik, Pascal and Cloud. Jones went on to beat Jeff Lacy.

Don't like to **** on an opinion, but Calzaghe going out on the Jones fight when he could have beaten undefeated Pavlik or undefeated Dawson is a major cop out.

Joe had one more fight left to go. why would he want to go through that **** again?

Hopkins crying and cheating to get points taken off? no thank you. Joe made the right decision going after the other fighter from his era in Jones.

that's not fair. Lacy was a very good fighter who was going places. he at least had the courage to face Joe and find the truth. Joe was the truth. :deal

:patsch he's not crying. he's just saying what any right thinking person would say. Froch isn't the best fighter since Lewis. i'm a big fan of Froch, but he's talking crap here. Joe is right.

it's not a cop out when he made a whole lot more money fighting Jones.

Dawson can't sell flies to ****.

Pavlik would never have fought Joe at 175.

    it's not hard to see.

He gave Roy 50/50. Jones must have thought he had won the lottery. Dawson held the WBC strap in the division Joe was fighting in. As for Pavlik, he jumped up to 170 to fight B-Hop just before Calz fought Roy. Obviously if Calzaghe wanted to fight Pavlik he could have done instead of B-Hop, at the catch weight or at 168.

It was a complete cop out and everyone knew it at the time too. In case you weren't around, go search for threads around that time. Everyone was in unanimous agreement that it was a **** fight when their were undefeated champions and belt holders who wanted to fight Joe.

Joe speaking to the Daily Mirror (?) in 1999

"I'm not chasing after Roy Jones. Be honest, Roy Jones is a good fighter and I don't want tough fights, I just want big money."

    ***.thefreelibrary.com/Boxing%3A+I%27m+lord+of+the+Welsh+rings+says+Calzaghe.-a060444934

“I Could Probably Give Jones A Tough Fight, Probably The Best Fight He’s Ever Had,” Said Calzaghe. “But I Know My Capabilities And Unless I Got Paid The Crown Jewels I Wouldn’t Want To Risk It.”

    ***.standard.co.uk/sport/i-am-the-best-says-honest-joe-6352495.html

Joe on fighting Roy Jones in 2007 from his own autobiography

"I have no interest any more in Roy Jones and no interest in Antonio Tarver. Jones is washed up and Tarver was never that good anyway, he just caught Jones when Jones was shot and Johnson did the same."

I like Calzaghe, he is one of the best SMW of all time. But let's not cloud the facts. Even Joe knew Roy was washed up, and didn't want anything to do with him in his prime.

I read his autobiog too, interesting insight, although quite a few exaggerations, like the drink stuff when he was younger, and repeatedly referring to 'the hardest shot I ever took'
I suppose 'tough fights' could be interpreted in a physical sense, in which case I totally understand, nobody wants brain injuries. And with the RJJ thing, since the book came out, RJJ was on form, so maybe that convinced Joe that a fight was worthwhile.
Toss-up between Cal and André Ward for me
