Do some of the bigger nations treat the Euros as a testing ground for their fringe fighters? For instance, in the light heavyweight class where is Egor Mekhontsev (Russia) and Oleksandr Gvozdyk (Ukraine)? Nikita Ivanov took part in the Euros in 2011 and lost to Joe Ward but it was Mekhontsev that represented the Russians in the Worlds and the Olympics
Ukraine rested their WSB boys while Russia have in effect two teams, probably about half of their strongest side here. The rest really have their best teams out, more or less. However with the Worlds coming up some individuals are keeping their powder dry. It seems a tougher Euros than the last one though as the top sides concentrated on the Worlds and Olympics.
Russia top the medal table with 9, then Ukraine with 5 and Ireland and Azerbaijan with 4! Well done lads.
I have to say I would agree with the idea of this in some aspects, it could completely work in our favour. They enter in the commonwealth so why not for the Europeans?, more of our boxers gaining international experience at a major competition could surely only benefit us for when the worlds and Olympics come around. Now Im not sure of the rules or anything so it might not even be a possibility and I could be blind and naive to the negative impact it would have for boxing in Ireland so feel free to point that out to me but i dont care much to get into any political debate.
Nevin and Conlan both should win. Barnes and Quigley are probably both underdogs, but both are still in with a great shout. I'm sure Burnett will have given Barnes advice on Alizada :yep Quigley is simply in outstanding form. 3 out of 4 is a good shout. Could well be 4 out of 4 though :bbb
