Daaaaamnnnnn! What a night of boxing! Damnit I love this sport. Maidana vs Lopez What can ya say. This was a firefight that not only lived up to the expectations, but surpassed them. It was guns blazing throughout, and just when it looked like Maidana would be too much for Lopez, Lopez showed the kind of fire, determination and heart that is defining him as a fighter, and stormed back to put Maidana in danger.... and looked to be taking control of the fight. Until Maidana, also in ways that define him as a fighter, seized back control, and ultimately the win, with his thudding power, finishing Lopez off with an unanswered barrage of punches. Great display by both fighters.... I think Maidana could benefit from a little more conditioning, and Lopez needs to learn not to back straight up in a line against an opponent like Maidana. What a fight though.... damn.
Lara vs Angulo In what I found to be a bitter-sweet fight, Angulo put on a valiant effort against the much more talented Lara, and could have very well been on his way to the biggest win of his career, when his forehead gave in to the punches and Angulo couldn't take it anymore. One thing I took away from this fight, is Lara is not nearly as good as his fans think he is, and is not as good as I thought he was either. There is no way in hell you should be getting trapped, cornered and beat up the way he was against Angulo at this point of his career. This should have been a showcase fight for Lara, instead it was a life and death struggle that he was very likely on his way to losing. Anyways, right before the last knockdown, Angulo looked sharp momentarily for the first time since Kirkland. His punches started to flow a bit quicker and he was closing distance better, its a shame that his brow exploded when it did. Lara showed a lot of poise in the fight, basically coming right back after getting dropped and maintaining control of the fight. Hes fast and accurate, but his skills are lacking, and he was also starting to get broken down in my opinion. But, his own fortitude saw him continuing to fire back, continuing to put some counter work in, and his resolve payed off. Props to both fighters for the displays they put forth. Both can be proud of their performance, and the fight they produced.
Dawson vs Stevenson In what was, for me, the most anticipated fight of the night..... Stevenson shocked Dawson by ripping the light heavyweight championship from him with one crushing blow. Im still in shock really lol, and still disappointed. Was hoping Dawson could do what he had to do tonight to get the W. The fight didn't really get a chance to get started before Stevenson ended it.... Although I have the typical disappointment I have come accustomed to recently with Dawson, I cant say that he really let anyone down. He just got caught. Maybe he shouldn't have been caught with that punch, ya.... but his defense has never been the best and Stevenson showed that his power is legit. Whats next, well Stevenson has lots of options now... or does he. It will be interesting to see what fighters step up to face him. Cloud Hopkins Froch Ward Kessler Pascal Bute and some may not like the idea, but really I wouldn't mind a rematch with Dawson. Lots of options. For Dawson, obviously getting back in with Stevenson has to be the priority. But maybe having a come back fight will do him some good. Hes on a bad streak, maybe at this point he needs to get in there and put on a performance to kinda get his mojo back, then go after Stevenson or Pascal, and try to avenge some losses. Anyways, was a shocking (or not so shocking), thrilling ending to a night of boxing that was like Christmas to me lol..... beautiful night to be a boxing fan. Hope everyone enjoyed the fights
Great job tonight Rummy! You would have been kicking yourself bigtime! Good choice at sticking with your gut feeling.
Thanks Dan. Im still buzzing from the fights, but think Ill be calling it a night. What a fun bunch of fights. Goodnight gang :good

So, basically, I have a 10 point total system. Meaning rounds can be scored 10-0, 9-1, 8-2, 7-3, 6-4, and 5-5. For example, tonight's fights had it all. In round 1 of the Erislandy Lara-Alfredo Angulo fight I scored round 1 10-0 in favor of Lara. This is a probably a rare case where a fighter shuts out one fighter in a round, but Lara was so dominate that I thought he won all the points in that one particular round. In round 2, he was still dominate, but not quite as dominate. Angulo was getting closer landed a few more shots, I scored that 9-1. In round 3, which I think is the perfect example of sort of what's wrong with the 10 point scoring system right now. This was by far Angulo's best round of the night, but scoring just that sole round, I don't think he won it. A very close round, but still a Lara round, IMO. I scored round 3 a 6-4 round in favor of Lara. In round 4, Lara was still landing good, clean, hard shots, but Angulo landed a bit more, plus the knockdown. So, this was a big round and he made up a lot of ground. In this round I scored it 8-2 Angulo. Lara continued to pile up the points, until Angulo knocked Lara down again. But, again, I just feel that this is a flaw in the 10 point must system. Lara was dominating the fight, but after two knockdowns, he was, technically, barely up on the scorecards. I had it 86-83 after the 9th round, but with my system I had it 59-31 in favor of Lara. Which, I feel is a more accurate reflection of the fight. Angulo was still in it with two huge rounds, but he was behind a fair amount given the fact that he was getting a boxing lesson for a good seven rounds, at least. The Charlo-Hopkins fight was interesting, and here I gave a lot of 5-5 rounds. To try and get a more accurate reflection of a fight if neither fighter deserves the round, then they don't deserve it. Again, going back to my baseball metaphor there are 0-0 innings, and that's sort of how I saw the rounds in the Charlo-Hopkins fight. In the end, though, the differential in points ended up the same. Scoring on the 10 point must system I had it 116-112 Charlo, and in my system I had it 62-58 Charlo. The Yuriorkis Gamboa fight was pretty much the same as the Charlo fight. A lot of close rounds, and in the end, the 10 point must system and my system had it about the same. I scored it 114-113 Gamboa, and 61-59 Gamboa. It's too bad the Maidana-Lopez fight ended in the 6th. I would have liked to have seen how that would have turned out. Overall, I'm happy with how it turned out and it gave me a new perspective of scoring fights. I'm looking forward to getting more fights under the belt with this system and seeing the results.
