Exactly why I hate the rule... Lloyd Honeyghan was royally screwed because of this. The old rule was fine. If it is not broke, do not fix it!
Because boxing used be on Network/Terrestrial TV, and the 12 rounders fit much better into the TV hour...
I agree with the open scoring guy! Changes the field for a lot of fighters. Gives them the edge oftentimes, but scoring is controversial, so it doesn't always reflect the nature of the fight.
Computer based amateur scoring and the old domestic cut rules (now sorted (to an extent) thankfully).
While this may have played a part, I think it's fair to say that the pieces fit together rather than this being the only reason. The reason put forward by the WBC at the time was health reasons following the Mancini v Deuk Koo Kim fight. Pressure from TV networks, plus the perceived health benefits probably made it a no brainer. I dont really have an opinion on 12 v 15 rounds. I think some of the fights we see on a 12 round basis are as good as the old 15 round fights. And it's swings and roundabouts. While we all would have loved an extra three rounds of Froch v Kessler, would we really have wanted an extra three rounds of Gamboa v Perez? I think research since though hasnt really been conclusive on whether 12 round fighs are safer than 15.
Provided it was used correctly the standing count could be a good thing. A lot of Refs s**t themselevs and stop fights because fighters arent smart enough to take to a knee. The standing count if used in those situations could enhance the fight.
It would maybe be worth trying 1 allowed for each fighter; where a fighter is backed up against the ropes and not throwing back, then it could be better than a possibly early stoppage.
