JJs conditioning lets him down he always seems to be running out of steam in the 3rd round of his fights. That alone will come effect him badly in the pros
Maybe that's because he's wrecked from getting the weight down? I'm sure if he was at a more comfortable weight in the pros, with training based a lot more on conditioning, we'd see a very different JJN. Another important thing which usually enters the am/pro discussion is whether or not a guy has the chin for the pro game. In fairness, I've never seen Nevin in trouble in this aspect. Saw him getting one count ever, against Valdez, and that was very widely accepted as a brilliant move by JJ just to give himself a break from the onslaught. The most conclusive evidence for me is that the little clonmel shite has said he hits very hard. This is a fella who fought serious bangers like Frampton, DOJ, etc. Accurate enough judge i'd say :thumbsup
Well that's just it. I haven't experienced it myself. Im basing my point on what Ive seen but if there's something there that I haven't seen well then fair enough. Im not having a go at Nevin in anyway but from the way he boxes I had a concern about him fighting as a pro. But I haven't had the pleasure you had of sparring him or seeing him in the gym so I'll have to take your word for it.
The chin is a question mark over every amateur when he/she turns pro. And I hope Nevin would have a decent one or at least keep his chin tucked away. He took a count against Campbell aswell but that was more a slip. The punch was a feather fisted counter.
I saw Nevin in the WSB, 5 rounds no vest, Headgear 10 points pro scoring boxing the French LIGHTWEIGHT PRO CHAMPION, UNBEATEN WITH 10 WINS. Nevin didn't give him a round and he was ALSO a former Olympic silver winner.
Saw that too Matt. The same night of Conlan-Selby I believe? Nevin absolutely destroyed him. To be honest it looked once or twice like he could stop him. He was toying with him really. I think that was the night that I realised JJ's definite pro potential
I'd certainly believe that he's struggling at the weight and will move up to 60Kg after the World's, and I'd agree with the fact he's big enough at the weight. But I said all things being right 56Kg is where he should be at. Now I don't doubt his dedication to either his diet or his training, but the majority of boxers I've come across (both amateur and pro) don't do what's optimal for them, and this has been backed up by other S&C coaches I've spoke to (including those who have worked with the GB team at the English Institute of Sport), and judging by how JJN looks and sometimes fades a little late in fights, I'd say there's a very strong chance things aren't optimal for him at the moment. But of course I can't say with 100% certainty without knowing his training in full and what he eats, just I believe it's highly likely.
I agree, was there for that too and Nevin was impressive. What was interesting that night was McGuigan was there too and was very animated during the Nevin and Conlan bouts. Both seemed to be looking at him and Shane for advice between rounds rather than their corner men.
Apparently tickets are going on sale for John Ryder vs Billy Joe Saunders. according to ***********.eastsideboxing.com/2013/billy-joe-saunders-john-ryder-tickets-on-sale/#more-13291 If that is true, then clearly Gary O'sullivan will need a knock out. Because BJS has already got plans for a fight in September clearly his promoter will make it happen at the expense of O'Sullivan. Collins should pull O'Sullivan out of this fight if you ask me. Unless the pay cheque is worth the loss!
I think it's more a case of overlooking Spike than corruption. With that said I unfortunately expect BJS to beat Spike fairly. I don't think you can turn down this sort of opportunity if you're Spike, his career isn't exactly sky rocketing at the moment, and if he pulled out for that reason I doubt Mr.****** would want too much to do with him after, which would leave him ina really bad position.
****** is just bad news. Everyone has known it for years, but it still doesn't make things any easier. Truly bad for the sport imo. It would be so great if Spike won, please god he can pull it off
I think its the fact that he's so far ahead usually that he switches off in the last round and also that he's tight on the weight ! Thats just my opinion because when hes in the WSB he seems superfit at 61kg and thats a 5 rounders, except his loss to Stancovic this year which was his first fight back in the ring since London i believe But look we could debate all day we'll never really know till he goes pro
