From what i have seen? Overrated but still one of the greatest. He was strong, fast and had a heck of a punch but i don´t see that insanse footwork or technique in general. His reflexes were astonishing but too many times he leaves himself open.
I have seen quite a few tapes if i may say so and i´d like to think i know what i am talking about. No way would he blow away any great fighter from the last 20 years.

More than fair for someone who never saw SRR fight live

 

I turn 30 at the end of July, but really I don't have much of an opinion on SRR. The footage that is available of him you can see even at an advanced age the dude is still an absolute beast, but there is a lot of missing footage and what we have is of rather poor film quality for the most part. It is just sad I wasn't even alive to witness the golden age of boxing.

 

More "pretty" than Ali,better two fisted power,better feet,fought absolutely everybody.He was classy too.He might be the most respected fighter ever.Criticism is hard to throw his way.He's the G.O.A.T..

 

Im 25 and like most others ive only seen footage on you tube, but from what ive seen and what I really like is that every punch is so accurate and lands so clean... and it wasnt just one punch it was combinations landing on point..Hooks,straights uppercuts. Very Impressive

 

He seems to me like the perfect combination of a fighter. Not perfect in the sense that he wasn't flawed or was the smartest or fastest, but the way he was built and the way he fought suggested the ideal formula while retaining a measure of mortality.

Though there was rarely a time he couldn't do what he wanted or needed to in that ring.

I haven't sat down to watch all his fights consecutively and evaluate his style, but from what I have seen, I was most impressed with his feet. The way he stepped into his jab was effortless gliding. The leverage he was able to accomplish by shooting from the hip was also visibly devastating.

I have to admit, at first I was a bit unimpressed, but as I learned more, I saw some of the more subtle aspects of his defense come out, his angled stance, the parrying and tucking of his chin, etc. And Ray sometimes took time to warm up and get going. Once he did, there was no denying his greatness.

Given what I've seen he was definitely one of the best of all time. But the absolute best? I think people are just parroting the opinions of those that came before them.

At the time he was revolutionary to boxing no doubt though.

 

iv only seen vids on youtube and looked at his record on wiki or boxrec and for what it is his record is amazing...alot of what little losses he had came at the end of his career.

with no amateur boxing league in those days it was natural for a boxer to have that many fights but most amateur careers include losses (even floyd mayweather had a couple)

so i have to give SRR his props, on film his power looks incredibly scary... he has 1 punch knockout power in both hands.. THATS ****ING SCARY!
