People really need to stop talking about things they don't know.

Mercer beat Tim Sylvia. Tim Sylvia was not trying to wrestle. He tried to box and got KO'd in 9 seconds. Tim Sylvia is not a top level MMA guy. His short reign occurred briefly during the dark ages of MMA...a time where he was the largest fighter out and the average HW was like 230lbs. Mercer didn't beat a top level guy. He beat a bum.

Also, Mayorga "won" via illegal knee and consequently had that "win" overturned into a NC. I don't even know his opponent's name. Why? Because he's far from top level MMA. And he didn't beat him up at all.

Don't talk about things you don't know.

If any respectable MMA guy tried to box him, he would knock them out in 10 seconds. If he tried to wrestle any respectable MMA guy, he would be tapping out in 10 seconds.

But if Tyson started in MMA and trained for that instead of boxing, I think he could've been a champion there too.

Tim Sylvia is/was, indeed, a bum.

Dark days of the UFC, indeed.

But also may lend credence to the POV of what many in boxing scene have come to describe and see the UFC as.

 

Yes. Boxing has had bums in the HW div too. Doesn't mean he's top quality. Boxing has had MORE bum HW fighters in the past 10 years than the UFC. 99% of HW boxers right now would get eaten alive in the UFC. Not just that, but Mercer beat Sylvia years after he already washed out of the UFC and got his ass handed to him multiple times. There is little validity to that win. Of course a legit former world champ will KO a washout playing his game. But for fair comparison, Randy Couture was on a downhill decline when he faced Toney and we saw what happened.


Did Mayorga make the other guy quit legitimately? No. That's like saying Golotta made fighters quit with nut punches. You can't win with an illegal blow. And Mayorga beat another bum, hand picked for him, who is far from top level and it was STILL far from a one sided beating. Mayorga struggled until the illegal knee.

I still think more boxers should learn wrestling. They would dominate MMA. But to use Mercer and Mayorga as an example is ridiculous.

Great boxers get clinched just like anyone else - the difference is that if a grappler gets a hold of them, they are going down instantly.
