Pryor was just blowing smoke and never had any real interest in fighting Ray Leonard. That's why he never moved up to get himself into position for the fight.

He was too sloppy in the ring and would have been beaten savagely by Leonard, Hearns, and Duran and clowned by Benitez.

Ray Leonard was a mean mofo in the ring and would hurt little Hawk very badly.

As others have said comes down to Pryor not being a draw until he beat Arguello and by that time Leonard had retired and it would have been too risky a fight to take as a first comeback fight and once Leonard was back for good having beaten Hagler, Pryor had lost.

Pryor was offered half a million but wanted more (for comparisons, he made about $50,000 a few months before when he beat Cervantes for the title). Leonard was a dictator in negotiations.

In retrospect, it was probably a good idea that Pryor didn't take the fight. I don't think he would have won. He ended up fighting more on network TV, built his name up, and ended up getting more for an easier opponent in Arguello. Not that an ATG like Alexis was "easy", but certainly easier than moving up to face SRL at 147.

People don't bother to actually learn history, they just believe the revisionist history. I hate revisionist history. Why do people have to bend the truth?

Duran offered Pryor a fight for $750,000. Pryor had managerial issues, his manager was a crook who was arrested for embezzling money. He turned down the fight because of the managerial issues, and I believe this is also around the time his wife shot him.

By the time he sorted out the managerial mess, Duran had moved on.

Pryor may have been avoided at lightweight, but him being this heavily avoided fighter at 140 and up is revisionist history (thanks HBO).

 

Leonard was too big for Pryor...plus he would have starched Pryor!!!
