The narrow point of view I was referring to was in regards to everything somehow being exclusively the fault of any and all of Calzaghe's prospective opponents.

I was saying that nobody really cares about the lineal champ at SMW, or CW or JMW, etc.......It doesn't have the historic value.

Nothing else was a possibility?Say what? He apparently wanted a unified MW champ and LHW champ, both based out of the US. So he fought exclusively in Europe, mainly in the UK, at SMW, fighting no common opponents. Doesn't seem like a program that has a real shot at success does it?

And it wasn't some quixotic stand against the unfair Americans man, which is how you make it sound. He had his comfort zone and stuck with it. Nothing wrong with that. It was successful, and lucrative after a while. But it's a bit silly to lament what could/should have been when the proper measures weren't taken to get it done. The US was, and is, the place to come if you want the biggest and best fights for the most part.

Warrren has a history of holding his guys back, of milking.

He wasn't THE champ until he unified. Before that he was a title holder, but yes, the best fighter in the division.

Divisional quality has its ebbs and flows.

We'll see about Garcia/Matthysse. I hope we get it.

People seem to forget Roy Jones ducked Calzaghe for years. Calzaghr kept telling us he could beat jones and when he got his chance he did it. He beat racist Hopkins as well.

WHO was going to pay Joe the crown jewels to fight Roy in 2002? NOBODY!


HBO had only seen a handful of his fights, and the Starie and Thorberry fights were stinkers.


Joe had a 15 year career.


For 11 of those 15 years, he fought in a DIFFERENT weight class to Roy Jones.


If Joe had've been serious about fighting Roy, he'd have moved up to 175 a lot sooner than he did.

First off, NOBODY has ever owned me on here.

Secondly, I'm from Sheffield and I've been watching Joe since he was 24 years old.

I know exactly how GREAT he was.

I've never doubted his talent.

But his ambition never matched his skills. He never tested himself enough. The man was far too good to be fighting at 168 from 99-2006, when he could have been mixing it with Roy, DM and Tarver etc at 175.

Joe was a great fighter!

But he didn't chase Roy like he claimed, and he's contradicted himself lots of times over the years.

You can't call out Roy's name in 2001, and then continue to fight at 168 in Britain, while Roy's in America at 175.

Think about it.

Talk is cheap. Anyone can call someone out. Joe did nothing after the dust had settled.

Finally, I'll debate with ANYBODY on here, and I'll actually use FACTS and logic to back up my arguments.

BTW I have watched Calzaghe since the first ABA win.

 

I'm not sure. He was a great fighter, but how many great fighters did he fight and beat? It's all subjective, but in my opinion the Hopkins fight was a draw, and he had no business fighting Roy after what he'd said.

He said in 2007 that a fight against Roy would be pointless.

Then early in 2008, he said he'd be disappointed to fight Roy, because he was no longer great.

He then backtracked on what he'd said and tried to pass off the victory as a great win.

It depends on what your criteria is.

He had the abilities that's for certain.

But he struggled to make weight in a weak division when he could have gone to the U.S. and moved up to 175 for better fights.

Lou De Bella gave him the opportunity in 1999, and it was turned down.

In my opinion, his biggest wins are Lacy and Kessler.

I'm a big fan of Kessler's, but the truth is, he hadn't beaten any great fighters, before Joe fought him to unify.

So can he be called an ATG?

I wouldn't argue with anyone who said that he was, but I can also understand why people say that he isn't.
