Sirius satellite radio, which has a big upside but right now has a very low market share, did the same with signing Howard Stern to a deal that pays him far more than can be justified by ratings ... but there are a lot of Stern fans out there and they get the service and maybe some friends get in the car with them and check out Sirius and see what all is offered and decide to subscribe even though they aren't Stern fans, or just having Stern's name associated with the product raises its awareness because he gets talked and written about every time he does something controversial.

I am a prime exampe of how this is working for Showtime. Back in December I decided I didn't want to pay for both HBO and Showtime. I rarely watch movies on either, but the boxing programming is key for me.

I went with Showtime because they show more fights, show replays much more frequently (with HBO it's the first showing, a Sunday replay and in most cases it goes into a vault where the fight becomes as rare as a Harry Greb career collection, never to appear on TV again) and, on the whole, IMO, in the last six months has had better fights and fights that I want to see more.

The biggest plus to Showtime to me is the undercards on Showtime Extreme for cards like the one Saturday night -- I got 5 straight hours of interesting, quality matches. HBO just doesn't give me that value for my money.

Showtime owns HBO how? By having half HBO's ratings and viewership?

Granted, showtime's last card was excellent, but Macklin Golovkin proves to be every bit as exciting and significant as either of those two matchups. Also, as mentioned, HBO has had two of the best of the year so far in Bradley/Prov and Rios/Alvarado.

Well said.

You don't pay Mayweather that kind of money just for his fights. You do it to make stars out of Abner Mares, Canelo Alvarez, Danny Garcia, Pete Quillin, L. Matthysee, etc. through either fights with Mayweather or on his undercards or through heavy advertising of upcoming fights during his events. Same for your original programming (Dexter, Shamelss, Homeland, etc.)

It's the reason FOX paid out the arse or the NFL back in the day.

Sounds like they got your subscription without the 12m, so they could have skipped the massive loss, or put it into their boxing budget for 4 more top notch cards. Or not, since hardly anybody is watching, as the recent numbers show.

Unlike Stern, you don't even have to have Showtime if you wanna see Floyd in action, unless you're one of the 50k that just had to catch All Access asap. And 12m loss on a 28m annual budget is not a loss leader, it's a disaster. 2 of these loss leaders and you might as well close down shop. And if Floyd was fighting anyone other than Canelo next, that's exactly what you'd get. Or worse, since you're battling a downward trend and bad word of mouth off Guerrero.

To be honest, if Showtime owns HBO, it's only because Mayweather signed the contract with Showtime. It's not because of the actual quality of the broadcast. I still think HBO does a much better job at actaully covering the sport of boxing. HBO boxing shows are much more professional and I hugely prefer Lampley and company to the clowns on Showtime.
