Foreman is one of the greatest no doubt but he lost to Ali in his prime so can never be regarded as the best ever. One of the things that most impressed me about Foreman other than winning the title at the age of 45 was that he won the Olympic title in 68 having only had his first amateur fight in 66. How many people could win an Olympic title within 2 years of stepping in the ring? His lack of amateur experience was why he was so crude during his prime and did not develop any real technical skills until his comeback. Imagine what he could have been like had he first stepped in the ring in his early teens like many top boxers.
Foreman is a good example how a fighter with limited skillset can become a great. He made the best out of what little skill he had and went far with it.
There is no disgrace in losing to Ali. There are not enough words to do Ali justice. His skills, ability to move. His footwork head movement and anticipation. George cut the ring off well in Zaire against Muhammad. Ali outsmarted him, yes. Mostly Ali toughed it out against George where others certainly would have wilted. George put full weight behind his punches. He could block punches with his massive arms. Slapping opponents guards down before landing massive head and body shots was a sight to see. All athletes now are on performance enhancing drugs also. That's why I cant put any of the modern day heavyweights ahead of him or Ali. The great Fedor Emelianenko also fits into that category. A man who was always the smallest guy, the underdog but always came out victorious. He just stayed a around little to long in the age of high performance drugs, bigger athletes. But Foreman has been inactive for 10 years or more, before his comeback; and during his comeback, he fought only tomato cans, apart the fight with Holyfield; Foreman is good, is great for hystorical reasons, a nice man, but he isn't the best ever. Not at all.
