Now Wladimir is behind this but I disagree with Pro's fighting Am's HOWEVER What about a Pro Tourny within the olympics? 4 rounds - 3 minutes (no fights effect pro records) Headgear and Amateur regulated gloves What about it?
No point, we know who the best is as pros, might as well let the ams shine in their tournament i also dont think nba or nhl guys should be in the olympics but oh well
I think something like this is going to happen sooner than latter. They are already making some changes in Olympic boxing to more of a pro style format. I think it will make the Olympics more intresting, but I think that the Olympics should be the only Amature boxing event open to profesonal boxers.
Most olympic boxers who do well in the olympics tend to be in their mid 20's about the same age that pro boxers peak.
No. AIBA is the organization in charge of boxing in the olympics. And to go to the olympics you have to qualify somehow (don't see that changing any time soon). Those two facts alone will prevent pro's from non AIBA organizations to compete, other than the odd exception (which I will believe can happen when I see it). The only chance would be to have team competitions (like the teams world cup) where each country choses whoever they want for their squads. But that won't happen either. AIBA had to cut one weight class just to accommodate more women's boxing.
A lot of guys are really really young in the amateurs. For instance, Antonio Tarver was a full grown man in his physical prime and he beat up some guys who were pretty young. Same thing is with a lot of cubans. 30 year old guys with hundreds of fights beating up teenagers :-( No need for seasoned pros to fight young amateurs. Not really "amateur boxing" when the professionals compete in it.
It'd be good in theory if the best guys went in for it. Imagine Mayweather, Matthysse, Pacquaio, Marquez, Garcia, Khan, Broner, Thurman going in for a 147 tournament in olympic format where winner goes on. But that'd never happen, it'd end up as a prizefighter type tournament with little or no meaning.
