In his pomp Tyson looked invincible as he closed range with short fast steps and slipping side to side with his gloves glued to his face and shooting upwards jabs to debilitate his opponents and then once in range and his opponent out of position and still trying to come to there senses after having there head rocked back by a piston like up jab they'd find themselves being hit by uzi like combinations to head and body.

A style that Cus D'Amato developed and Kevin Rooney nurtured. It looked imperious and was the awe of any young aspiring boxer. The no socks and black trunks become the statement of intent for many boxers across the world even to this day.

The question is since Iron Mike's prime we've seen many pretenders to the crown. Many who've fallen short at domestic and european level over here. They seem to lack the understanding of what made Mike so successful. The jab neglected, the head movement non existent and the explosive combinations replaced by 2 punches..

Watching the lad James Stabler from another thread got me thinking. Watched his padwork and didn't see any Tyson like attributes.

Do you feel we will see the Tyson Style successful again on the world stage?.

Do you feel fighters have over the years sussed the style out and now combat it with regular success?.

Tyson had breathing issues IIRC but have noticed it takes a great deal out of fighters who try the style.

Does it need to be tweaked to modern day boxing?.

    Thoughts.

I do wonder if like Naz and his style whether the style was purely down to Tyson being special. Some styles only suit that fighter and maybe would have to be tweaked to be successful again.

I love the style, Everything was right about it from a short pressure fighters POV.

Tyson was explosive and accurate and seemed pretty natural at it.

I've said this before natural ability cannot be taught, Tyson's style can be copied but I dont think anyone will ever do it as good as Mike.

No one will quite pull it off like Tyson because he was the first and no one had seen it before so he will always "own" that style. The reason he pulled it off for me were due to him being only 5ft 11 and having a low sense of gravity, he could duck and weave forward moving his head then throw a jab with enough power to put his opponent off their game for a split second which is all it took for him to follow up with a right hand. He had such freakish power that he could take those risks as the smaller man and because everyone was afraid of him they rarely took the opportunity to throw much back at him so he had it his own way a lot.

James Stabler is has the same style as Tyson. Hes the next heavyweight champion of the world. Wank and Eddie are fighting to sign him. He cant fight yet because Eddie said wank has been tapping him up. So its a legal battle now.

  8. Denton vassell reminds me of him with his constant stuttering head movement, finding the openings
Admittedly he doesn't fight like him but when I watch him I'm reminded of tyson

I do not see the 'D'Amato bob and weave style' being really successful again. Patterson and Tyson were speed freaks, who had years to learn and develop the D'Amato style.

I think it sometimes forgotten/overlooked if Tyson had, had 'Rosenbloomesque' power, he still would of been very special; the power was 'merely' an added bonus, as he had the fastest hands since Ali in his pomp.

Since Tyson, Jeremy Williams to a degree tried it with a little bit of success, but only the hardcore remember Williams...

Tyson was also a special athlete wasn't he, it wasn't just about his style/tactics, as was proved by how blunt he was when he'd been inside and got a little older.

Young man's style, dependent on speed, power and athleticism.

There will never be another like Tyson, because you can't be succesful while being so short anymore, and you can't really use his style if you're not short like him.

Good thread mate, and the other one about Poor Man's too, glad to see this forum hasn't been totally abandoned by decent posters and some of the old guard!
