MW from the divisions history with the best equipment to take out Greb?

Hey everyone thankyou for the welcome! It's nice to be on board the classic section. Whenever I imagine someone going against Greb, I remember an article about Tunney recalling his first fight with "the human windmill".
Tunney stated that in the first round Greb headbutted him in the face severely breaking his nose and how he bleed profusely throughout the fight, then proceeded to cuff, lace, clinch, and spin Tunney for 15 rounds. Oh yeah
he punched him too!
It must have been some experience going against Greb back in the day. A tough man in a tough business thatsfor sure.

 

Tunney had to be carried back to his dresing room after that fight.

 

Spot on! He would have been beaten by many a decent Middleweight.

Harry Greb is the most overated fighter on ESB.

 

I am not sure that it is possible to over rate Greb.

He arguably has the best resume of any fighter in the history of gloved boxing. Certainly the best of any middleweight.

People like Hopkins, Jones and Hagler could beat him on a given day but they would always loose a series of three.

 

Had Les Darcy of attended to his broken tooth he would have surely provided Greb, at his natural weight, with his sternest test.

The young Darcy, as a physical specimen and a boxer defined the word 'complete', yet the way he mixed brute strength with a fleet-footed, paced boxing ability was unique to himself as was Greb's combination of frantic speed and marauding/fouling ways.

Understated men who would worry Greb: Stanley Ketchel, Marcel Cerdan, Dick Tiger, Bernard Hopkins.

 

How about three more candidates to give Greb a fight? What do you guys think of a young (but strong and talented) Ezzard Charles, and two of the very best (from Greb's hometown no less!)

Tommy Gibbons-Greb I & II were for ten rounds, and they happened before Tommy "fell in love with his power" as older brother Mike criticized him for. [His subsequent use of that power got Tommy to Shelby, so I can't share Mike's criticism. We talk about the Gibbons brothers today because of Shelby.] But it was Tommy who ended Greb's most legendary streak at Forbes Field in May 1920. Make their second match for 15 rounds, then Tommy may have had a chance to take him out before the final bell, if that was his objective. There are reports that Harry experienced significant difficulties with Tommy in their second bout. [I'd defer to klompton2 for further details though. His opinion might be the best one to solicit for this thread.]

Fitz. We've seen what he did to Corbett while weighing 167 at age 34. Put him at his MW peak, he might have the power to do the same thing to Greb's body.

 

To say that Greb would definatly beat Hagler for a series is a bit silly imo. He could sure, but people are acting like it's a given. I see Jones... Tiger... Hagler.. SRR all having good shots and beating him and pulling off series wins.

Keep in mind that George Chip was considered the deadliest MW puncher in the post-Ketchel years. In fact many considered his power to be on par with Ketchel, just not as great a finisher. He floored Jeff Smith, something nobody did before and never would again until Gene Tunney pulled the trick against an aged Smith many years later.

literally laughed at the idea of Jake LaMotta vs Greb and said..
"You tell Jake he couldn't handle being Harry Grebs sparring partner"

My previous post was to underscore the fact that Greb had already pasted one of the deadliest right-handed punchers in MW history, George Chip. So I don't think he'd be sweating Ramos much either.
