I get a lot of people saying Frazier had one of the best chins ever in the sport, but I've gotta say I disagree. Whilst he had a good chin, and took some heavy shots in his career and stood up to them, I would say it was Fraziers heart that was actually the biggest thing, his mauling vs Foreman is a key example of this - goes down easily but keeps getting up. Your thoughts?
There are two halves to "chin"/punch resistance - 1) the ability to in the first place absorb lots of shock without going down/losing your balance/getting muddled/seeing stars 2) the just as important ability to recuperate and shake the cobwebs before a motivated opponent can finish you off. Frazier like Juan Manuel Marquez is an example of someone with a whole lot more of #2 than #1. Some guys rely on #1 their whole career and then when somebody finally cracks 'em, we find #2 is lacking. The truly inhuman-seeming iron-chinned warriors of the sport have both in spades.
Frazier hed quite a mediocre chin : neither particularly bad nor good . He was hurt by Quarry , floored 2wice by Bonavena , end diz men wer not de best of punchers / finishers . Frazier woz quite protected ez wel laik most wer , kept ewei from Shavers and Lyle . Hi daz meik de lower 1/2 of mai top 20 h2h S/HW OAT , so i du rispekt him 4 hiz achivments & abiliti . Veri fiu kud stend ap 2 4man wizawt chiting /& heving de benefits of chiting , end diz fiu du not inklud Ali .
I feel that if Fraizer boxed like a typical fighter, his chin would not be in question but, since he perfected a style that forced him into the teeth of every fighter he ever faced he dealt with chin setbacks. Nothing was going to help him trading punches with Foreman. Foreman dents all chins. I think he has solid chin. He took leather, and more leather from Ali. He stayed in his chest through it all hooking. His chin was as good as anyone else's in that division. Even Rocky Maricano went down a couple time. Foreman was down and out by a simple combination from Ali. Frazier chin was solid and respectable.
Joe Frazier had a good chin and big heart. His mental toughness was also a key. Joe could take severe punishment and keep chugging forward and fighting his fight. Even when he was getting peppered he would keep the pressure up and not abandon his own offense. It was uncommon the punches Joe could take.
Marciano, by his own admission was badly hurt and nearly stopped by the 170 lb, "monster", Carmine Vingo, who had 6 KO's in his 17 wins. Marciano was also dropped by 190 lb. ancient Jersey Joe and nearly KO'd by grandpa light-hvy, Archie Moore. Joe Frazier had a good chin. Because of his bobbing-weaving style, he was easy to be hit by hooks and especially uppercuts. If you get hit solid by such a punch from a hard punching heavyweight, you're likely to get hurt or dropped. No fighter who ever lived is going to be hit flush by a Foreman uppercut and not get his brains scrambled. A young Ali was nearly KO'd by Henry Cooper. Foreman was dropped by Jimmy Young. Any heavy will go down if hit right in the right circumstances. It doesn't mean he has a weak chin.
His chin was great. His style put him in peril. Anyone taking heavy shots right on the money can get staggered or go down. Frazier walked right into Foreman's bombs. Frazier was green when he fought Bonavena the first time. Joe's chin should not be questioned.
What a horrible post. Kept away from Shavers and Lyle? Shavers was getting KOed in 5 by Ron "****ing" Stander in May of 1970, that must have put a lot fear in Frazier's management team. Lyle didn't even turn pro till 1971. I think Frazier might have been a little busy with the fight of the century, Quarry, Foreman, Ali, You know, stuff like that. Y dont u use yo fcuking brain or is taht jus howl u du?
frazier had a better chin than marciano who was dropped by the weak 40 years old former middleweight and lhw archie moore, frazier took every shot from the hardest lhw puncher in bob foster like nothing and then destroyed him like an insect. george foreman could not stop frazier for the 10 count, yes he had better chin than marciano, he never had any problem with fighters who weighed less of 200 pounds, you are a clown and nobody cares about your **** opinion.
