See lots of discussion re the Paulie-Broner fight, discounting Paulie's punches to Broner's arms.

Are they or aren't they landed punches, 'n should count?

dont know weather they should count as scoring shots but they are very effective imo

You have to land on the torso to gain a point. Arm punches are considered miss punches or blocked.

If one fighter lands punches on the other guy's arms and the other guy does nothing, then of course the 1st guy gets credit with the judges.

Landing on the arms is better than missing or not throwing punches at all.

Short answer: They aren't scoring blows; so no, they don't count...especially if someone positions/maneuvers himself in such a way as to take the blows on their arms, instead of their torso (as Broner often did against Paulie).

Slightly longer answer: They don't count as scoring blows, but if it serves to deter the opponent from throwing anything in return, then it can be considered 'effective aggression', or 'ring generalship'...and those are two of the four main forms of scoring criteria. That's a big reason why I personally gave Paulie five out of the twelve on my card.

Don't think so. But it's a good strategy to wear a fighter down.

Rules state "Effective punching is a clean blow to the front or side of the head or body with the closed knuckle part of the glove".

However, as stated earlier, if a round is otherwise even then the fighter leading off or displaying the better style and taking the fight to his opponent would get credit. This is where scoring becomes a grey area.
Theoretically you could take 7 or 8 light clean shots but still win the round if you land only one or two but your shots are "more effective" ie hurtful.
In a close round many judges favour the fighter who takes the centre of the ring and comes forward even if he is quite ineffective doing so. Personally I think that Paulie deserved more points for his fast but admittedly weaker clean punches. Clearly the judge who had it 117-111 disagreed!!

Thanks for the savvy answer, clarifying...Remember Marciano dismantled fighters, landing on the arms.

He sure did. And I remember I guy in the Classic forum a few years back who wrote that Marciano used to broke blood vessels in peoples arms which is the same thing as getting bruised if you bump into an edge of a table for example.
But it sounds way cooler that he broke blood vessels.

It doesn´t add anything to the thread but I just remembered it now when you mentioned Marciano and arm punches.

The thing is when you are there watching, the fight in person, and they are popping them quick sometimes you can't tell in that moment, if the punch landed on the arm, shoulder, chest, or torso. (in my experience in some cased) So very plausible that arm shots are being seen as body shots whether they are supposed to or not. Especially when you are trying to use a "should roll style/type" defense.

Arm punches have no visible effect on opponents, hence why judges don't score them.

The same reason that Paulie lost the fight on points. His punches had no visible effect on Broner.

I feel if you punched someone in the arms and you clearly hurt the person, then a judge would score it.
