Experts opinion on broner malignaggi.

I had it 116-112 nad i am a big big Malignaggi fan. I despise that fight because Boners power is what got him the W. In the middle rounds Malignaggi tired and Broner landed the better shots.

 

Thought Broner edged it, but was rootin' like hell for Paulie

 

In the early going even though Paulie wasn't landing much clean(or as per usual much with power), his workrate was so vastly greater than Broner that Broner's scant few clean shots weren't enough to justify giving him the rounds. Around Round 4, Broner started to pick up his pace and while he never dropped or seriously hurt Paulie it was pretty clear that Paulie was getting worked over pretty effectively. Paulie still was throwing a higher number of punches, but Broner's more effective shots were landing with more regularity. Paulie was also pretty visibly looking ragged and tired. To his credit, he really pushed himself in the championship rounds while Broner coasted a bit and made a small case for himself if you really like workrate, but I thought it was a pretty clear win for Broner(also had it 116-112 for Broner). The takeaway from the fight in my view though is that while Broner won, he didn't look spectacular in doing so and Paulie is the weakest of the Welterweight champions by far.

If you use proper scoring criteria, there is no way you score that fight for Paulie.

Clean Punching: Broner - Out-landed Malignaggi overall, and landed significantly more power shots. Landed at a higher percentage and Broner's shots were clearly doing more damage than Paulie. Not even close
Defense: Broner - Despite Paulie throwing over 800 punches, Malignaggi only landed at what? 23-24%? Excellent performance by Broner who has catching most of Paulie's punches on the arms and elbows.
Ring Generalship: Push - Both men did what they wanted to in spots. Broner was able to track Paulie down and land some hard counter shots, and at times, Paulie was using his activity and movement to limit Broner's output.
Effective Aggression: Broner - 80% of that ring belonged to Broner as he had Paulie running from ring post to ring post. Broner was able to cut off the ring and land his power shots, while taking minimal damage in the process. Effective Aggression.

Paulie didn't land **** to the body either btw. I don't know what body shots you were counting, but arms and elbows aren't landed punches. On what grounds did Paulie win? What 7 rounds did you give him? "Activity" is not a scoring criteria in boxing...... See above.

Could Broner have done more? Sure... but that is not grounds to say he lost the fight. Broner clearly won. Press Row also had Broner clearly winning and the description from Dan Rafael at ESPN was: "Paulie sounded like slapping a mosquito off an arm when he punched." You talk about how you didn't see the power in Broner's shots (LOL, get those eyes checked), but you saw it in Paulie's shoe shining and arm punching attack? Please.....

Oh and as a final note, that 117-111 scorecard? That is the only judge who had another judge agree with his view of the round in all 12 rounds. A perfect scorecard. It was the most legitimate scorecard of the 3.

The 115-113 for Paulie scorecard? Dude was flying solo in 4 of the rounds with his scoring..... The least legitimate scorecard of the 3.

 

man you guys start hating someone what really happens doesnt matter. i had 117 112 broner. im not a fan of either outside the ring at all. i thought both come off kinda classless. probly more so on palie's side cause he works for network. but i dont get where paulie was landing all these punches. he got outlanded by what 50 punches. and if anybody says his punches were having more effect than broner's c'mon man. i will say this palie fought his heart out and should get credit for that. broner should also get credit for jumping 2 wait classes fighting a fighter n paulie's class 1st fight in at that weightclass and his hometown. i dont right in much but this stuff that paulie won this fight geez. broner clearly won fight. it was a good fight to watch and wasnt a total wipeout but just cause it was a lilcloser than people thought doesnt mean he won.

Exactly! These ***gits have no clue how to score a fight involving a boxer they absolutely despise. It doesn't matter how much of a tool Broner is, or how much he bragged before the fight. He won more rounds, because Paulie maybe connected with 10 head shots the entire fight, and the rest were on the arms and shoulders.

Broner landed more punches in 7 of the 12 rounds. He landed more power punches in 11 ouf of the 12 rounds. Broner landed over 50% of his power shots and landed more than double the power shots Paulie landed. Broner's punches were moving Paulie. Paulie's punches seemed like nothing more than an annoyance to Broner. Clean, effective punching. That's the most weighted scoring criteria, that's the scoring criteria that Broner domintated, that's how he won. Frankly, it's ridiculous to hear people still churp about having to "take the title" away from the champ. That's nowhere in the rule book. In fact, the title is vacated once the bout starts, meaning that neither guy is technically champ during the fight.

 

This thread is a perfect example of not knowing how to score fights. I wanted Paulie to win as much as anyone but he clearly didn't. And he knows it himself. Just watch his reactions to the score cards and decision. He talked his side up more after Broner totally disrespected him. Great effort and heart by Paulie, but he didn't win.
