I think he should too, out of principle, but then he won't get paid. What is it, 15% of the purse per pound over 152 or something? He shouldn't even be in a position where he has to make such a tough decision.

Yeah, but why are you screaming about this instead of Canelo? Canelo signed. If the weight affects Canelo, we will find out. This is an intriguing fight though.

Wait a minute, Mayweather said he doesn't want to fight a guy where he's not comfortable. Canelo says he's comfortable at 152. He even offered in the past to go down to 150. That quote from Mayweather was from February of 2012, the quote from Canelo is from the end of November of 2011. That's a 2 or 3 month difference. Why is Mayweather expected to be a slave to past comments but not Canelo? If Mayweather says he wants to fight guys where they are comfortable and Canelo says he'd be willing to fight at 150, then what is the problem? Mayweather reads everything and forgets nothing. Mayweather said he's a WW, Canelo's side said they could do a CW. Mayweather said let's fight at 150 then seeing as how Canelo said in the past he would go down to 150 for the fight. Canelo's side balked, and they settled at 152. I don't see what the problem is.

I hear what you're saying, you do make a fair point. But again, Mayweather went out on a limb about how catch weights are meaningless and what not. I'm all about equality when it comes to being slave to past commens. But again, it's not just about being a slave to past comments, it's about being honest about what really happened in the negotiations. even if Canelo said that, still Mayweather is the one who requested the catch weight. I'm not sure of the context of that Canelo quote in 2011. He might have been asked on the spot would you go down to 150. It's not like Canelo came out and called Mayweather out and said lets have a 150 catch weight fight. That's definitely not what happened. You made it seem like Canelo did what Dawson did and that's not the case.

You can't blame Canelo for wanting the Mayweather fight, and agreeing to conditions set forth by Mayweather since it was the only way to make the fight. I don't think you can hold that 2011 statement against him if he was asked by a reporter whether he would consider going down in weight. It's disingenuous to use that statement from 2011 out of context as if that means that Canelo's camp offered up the catch weight. That was also before the Cotto fight, and at that time Mayweather had fought his last 4 fights at 147, and the Cotto fight at LMW was not announced yet. When Mayweather went up to 154 to fight Cotto and made a big deal about there not being a catch weight, that's where the problem started for Mayweather.

What I said was that Canelo said he was willing to fight at 150. The quote backs this up. You are the one inventing scenarios about what prompted that quote.

Do you not see how you're talking out of both sides of your mouth here? You say Canelo's offer to go to 150 is meaningless because it didn't take place during negotiations. That's fair. However, did Mayweather make any mention of not fighting at a CW during negotiations? The answer is no. Why is Mayweather expected to be held to something he says to a reporter but not Canelo?

Also, you say Mayweather fought at 154 after Canelo made the 150 comment which changed the situation. That's fair. However, you have to give Mayweather the same consideration. He made his comment before the Cotto fight and before he went to jail. That was a tough fight for Mayweather and his face was marked up more than usual. Maybe that fight, combined with incarceration made him realize that it might be physically too much for him to be competing at 154. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

I'm not inventing scenarios, I'm simply looking at the timeframe at which things were said. Mayweather said that Canelo's camp came to him with a catchweight offer. That is untrue. In reality, like a seasoned gambler, Mayweather started at 147, even though he knew there was no chance of the fight happening at 147. Schaefer came out and said Canelo cannot go lower then 154. But Mayweather wouldn't fight unless it was at a catchweight, so he put pressure on Canelo to drop down to 152 by implementing a purse penalty if Canelo weighed more then that. That was the only way Mayweather would fight. Which is a clear ***** move considering he fought at 154 the year before and made a big deal about no catch weights. The titles are on the line though if he comes in at 154 since they are 154 titles. The quote doesn't back up what Mayweather said, which was that Canelo's team came to him with an offer to fight at a catch weight. On the contrary. It was Mayweather who wouldn't agree to the fight unless there was a catchweight penalty written into the contract, which would only affect Canelo since he doesn't have to struggle to make 154 or 152, since he can just gain a few pounds from welter.

Canelo didn't make an offer to go to 150. When asked about the possibility of doing that in 2011 he said he was willing to do that. If he doesn't answer yes to that quetsion, then you know what would happen. Then all of a sudden Canelo would be "ducking" Mayweather. That was a completely reasonable thing to say considering he was the 154 lb champ and FMJ was the 147 lb champ. However, when Mayweather became a 154 lb champ by beating Cotto, and showed that he can fight in that division without a catchweight, then it was no longer a situation where Mayweather was coming up, he was already there. And he remained a 154 lb champion when he fought Guerrero at 147.

Both should be held to their statements. But both statements are not the same. Canelo's commentin 2011 was much more benign and outdated then Mayweather's 2012 statement about 154 lb catchweights, which was much more relevent to the Canelo fight. It's not as if I'm ignoring Canelo's statement and only focusing on Mayweather's. It's the substance and the significance of both statements. Mayweather was the one who made a big deal about not fighting Cotto at a catchweight. Canelo merely responded to a reporter asking him about whether he would consider dropping down to 150 to fight Mayweather, who was seen as only a 147 lb fighter at that time. It is unclear whether or not Canelo's comment in 2011 had any real meaning. It wasn't an offer, it was a hypothetical situation at that time, at the time people were still clamouring for Pacquiao Mayweather and Canelo Mayweather wasn't seriously being considered. There was nothing hypothetical about Mayweather's statements in the pre-fight of Cotto. Those statements spoke to Mayweather's character, how he isn't the sort of guy who would drain a fighter like Pacquiao did to Cotto. Canelo's statement in 2011 was not the same as Mayweather's 2012 statements. Mayweather's 2012 statements set the tone for the public's perception of Mayweather's view on catchweights. Canelo's statements in 2011 were largely forgotten, and sounded like a reaction to a situation where he would be forced to drop down to 150 to make a Mayweather fight, not being able to predict that Mayweather would then move up to 154 and make a big deal out of not having a catchweight, rendering the point moot.

I am giving Mayweather a lot of consideration. I do believe that was a tough situation Mayweather was in, having to fight knowing he was going to jail. That had to be really really tough and honestly I don't know how he did it. There's just a lot of hypocrisy when it comes to Mayweather. The irony is so thick you could cut it with a knife. This is the same Mayweather who dedicated the Corrales fight to all the battered women out there, and lo and behold he goes to jail for domestic violence himself years later.

I think what happened here is Mayweather's truth is basically dependent on Canelo's 2011 statement, being treated as if it was an offer to fight the fight at 150 in recent negotiations, which it wasn't. Canelo himself didn't agree to 150, as 2 years later things change. If you forget about both Canelo's 2011 statement as well as FMJ's 2012 statements about catchweights, and just look at the 2013 negotiations in a vacuum, then there's still no way you can conclude that it was Canelo that came to FMJ about the catchweight.

Canelo's trainer's statements aren't consistent with this view, nor is logic. it makes no logical sense why Canelo would request a catchweight penalty on himself to punish himself if he doesn't come down to 152. he is obviously most comfortable at the weight limit where he and mayweather both hold belt. it was obviously Mayweather's demand, to suggest otherwise is preposturous. Further, Floyd's nervousness, body language, followed by incorrect statements about who wanted the catchweight in that youtube video should tell you all you need to know.

I think it's important to establish the fact that this catchweight was 100% Mayweather's idea. Even if Canelo said he was willing to drop down in 2011 when FMJ was fighting exclusively at 147 and he wanted to show that he would try to get that fight. If he doesn't say he would drop down to 150 then, he would be accused of ducking FMJ, and then FMJ would have an excuse to not even try to make the fight with Canelo. You know how that works.
