Now it's been officially announced thought I'd start a poll. Apologies if there is one already but couldn't find it. I think this will be more competitive than people think but see kovalev getting to cleverly an stopping him mid to late rounds with it fairly even on the scorecards, kov possibly ahead.
Kovalev will destroy Cleverly's ridiculously stupid looking nose and ruin ******'s cash cow. Horrendous match making.
Makes a change to be looking forward to a Clev fight for the first time since the Bellew bout. Kovalev has power but those saying this is a huge step up for Clev seem to be ignoring the fact that this is a bigger step up for Kovalev. If Kovalev walks through him like many seem to be predicting then fairplay to him. Don't see that happening though and when it doesn't happen for him the fact this will be only his 3rd 12 rounder will catch up with him.
Kovalev already fought and trashed a former beltholder (Campillo), who was robbed from clear wins against Shumenov, Cloud and Murat. And should have been the IBF champ at that time. Cleverly never fought a beltholder or former beltholder in his career thus far. Clearly Cleverly is making the bigger step up here.
Cleverly is also a huge step up for Kovalev!! Why people are writing Cleverly off and acting like Kovalev is beating anyone with total ease is beyond me. He looks good but thats it. im interested to see what happens when both of these two step it up so we can see how good they both really are.
If you're holding up Campillo as some kind of benchmark in this comparison then what Cleverly did to Murat throws a bit of a spanner in your argument, considering Campillo could only draw (albeit disputed) with Murat after Cleverly had already stopped Murat himself.
Campillo doesn't have much power and isn't from one of the big boxing countries. He has to win on points, and that's pretty hard (or sometimes even impossible) on hostile territory. That's why he's one of the most robbed guys in boxing today. Cleverly stopping Murat is probably Nathan's best performance, and I actually didn't expect that. But the comparison of one guy stopping another against another boxer doesn't always hold up, because you have to take difference in punching power into account.
Same reason people are saying the average Stevenson is a zillion classes above Tony Bellew in the other thread, British defeatism, Cleverly should be clear favourite here
Why should he be, apart from the fact he's the home fighter ? Their opposition is comparable, Murat being the best win for Cleverly and Campillo for Kovalev, but the way they handled their opponents is not. Cleverly has hardly been impressive even in winning while Kovalev has been smashing people around. Kovalev might get tested or "exposed" later in his career but it likely won't be by Cleverly who doesn't have much to beat this guy. This is not Froch - Bute 2.0.
I agree with that. We are a very pessimistic nation. I believe Cleverly should be favorite going into this fight. Not by a long long way but deffo the favorite. I think his opposition has been better. I also think that going into this fight, Cleverly will be in a better place mentally than Kovalev. just with momentum, fan base, the fact hes had his world title for 2 years and hes fighting at home. I really dont know how you cant dislike Cleverly with the way he fights and acts outside the ring. I think people are just looking at the fact that hes had a couple of regulation defense and now they are calling him a bum. So when a unbeaten guy with power comes along they are just waiting for him to knock him out so they can say i told you so. Give the kid a break. Hes British, World champ and unbeaten. We dont get many of them so we should back them when we do. Stop being so ****ing negative people. Lets just enjoy what will be a good fight and support one of our champs.
