Ha! Yeah, because there's been HUNDREDS of former 160-175 fighters that have gone up and dominated a top 5 guy, right?
Under those circumstances a lot of other fighters would have dominated Ruiz also. You seem to not be able to comprehend this for some reason. Again, Jones didn't face Ruiz under the same circumstances everyone else did. The referee took away his only weapons. Ruiz is a flat footed plodder who isn't going to outbox anyone. If the rules were enforced Ruiz would have never been a WBA beltholder.
So you expect Ward, Froch, Kessler to go up and fight a Klitschko? Huge difference there between Wlad & Vitali and John Ruiz. :roflatsch Roy would not go up and fight either if he was around today. Ruiz was a handpicked fight. Period. Why are you asking people to go up and fight 6'6" power punchers with greater than 85% KO rates and you were fine with Roy fighting 6'2 220 pound feather fisted and no skilled John Ruiz. Just a bit hypocritical don't you think :huh
Rico Spadafora, I don't expect Ward, Froch and Kessler to go up to fight ANY RANKED HW! Ward will probably move up to 175 at some point, and I'd expect that to be as a high as he goes. I'm not being Hypocritical at all. What I'm saying is, if Ruiz was still active today and it was 2003, Ward, Kessler and Froch wouldn't even consider going up to fight him. Also, for the hundredth time, Evander Holyfield was the initial target. Roy would have fought Evander in 2002, if he'd have beaten Ruiz and won the belt in their 3rd fight in 2001. Roy was prepared to meet Evander. So, would Froch, Kessler, Ward, or anyone else at 168 or 175, have been willing to go up and fight Holyfield, if they'd have been in Roy's position in 2001/2002? I think not.
Again, Ruiz was the perfect opponent at the perfect time. He wasn't ever going to fight Holyfield. If he wanted to fight Holyfield he could have AFTER he beat Ruiz. Nothing was stopping him. Just like he could have fought Tyson or Lennox or Sanders or anyone else but he didn't want to risk it. You need to understand that. Ruiz was a handpicked fight.
He wasn't ever going to fight Holyfield?? He had various talks with him late 2001. After he drew with Ruiz, Holy asked Roy if he still wanted the fight, and Roy said no. The reason he said no, is because he didn't think he'd get any credit, and there was no title at stake. So he remained at 175 to weigh up his options. He had a few mandatories, was open to a Hopkins rematch, and then when that fell through he targeted Ruiz. Let me know when this has sunk in? Even if he had've cherry picked Ruiz, it was still an accomplishment at 35, after nearly 50 fights. Ward, Kessler, Froch etc wouldn't cherry pick a 220 HW. They haven't even gone up to 175. Tarver goaded Roy into coming straight back down from HW. Do you even watch any boxing?
:roflatsch Roy had 'talks' with a lot of fighters and those fights were never made. Wonder why? What is the common denominator?
Ruiz was a glorified clubfighter. He only was able to accomplish what he did through blatant cheating(hitting/holding, excessive clinching, faking low blows, wrestling etc) all made possible by the influence of Don King, just go watch some of Ruiz fights! not only that, he received SEVERAL gift decisions also due to his connections with King. Without that Ruiz was garbage. Before King signed Ruiz and "took him under his wing" Ruiz was going life and death with guys like Jimmy Thunder and he got absolutely flattened by David Tua is 19 seconds.... But don't just take it from me... you should read a very well written article that will sway you to my side of things(at least in regards to John Ruiz) the article is called John Ruiz: symbol of boxing corruption. It's been posted on here several times and I would post it, but I am not allowed to post links so you'll just have to search that yourself and read it.
Jones only failed ONE drug test in his entire career due to a supplement called "Ripped Fuel" that Jones took prior to the Richard Hall fight. It had a performance-enhancing substance that Jones claimed to be not aware of, and probably was not aware of because over-the-counter supplements are not evaluated by the FDA. Fact: he would've beaten Richard Hall's ass with or without ripped fuel. Eric Cantona is a hopeless CalSlappy fanboy who can't get over the fact that Slappy's best wins were against well-faded fighters (Jones & Hopkins). Prime Jones > Prime Calzaghe. Watch some tape please.
I know all about John Ruiz and his ugly style. But you can't spin the facts. Roy was 34, he'd had 50 fights, and Ruiz was a top 5 HW. Name me all of the other 34 year old former MW's, that have gone up and beaten a top 5 guy? How long will the list be? There's Toney. Who else?? Also, Toney only went up to HW, because he HAD too. His weight was so out of control in couldn't fight any lower than HW. Even making CW was hard for him. Which current 168-175 fighters, do you think will go up and fight at HW?
