Just because something is "safe" does not mean that it is incorrect. That said, I do agree that GGG is showing signs of true greatness and whilst I currently believe that prime Hagler beats GGG my opinion may very well change in the future. But GGG would have to become the greatest middleweight of all time to beat Hagler decisively! What intrigues me is how avoided he is!! As that is often a decent gauge of how good a fighter is. At present GGG appears to be head and shoulders above all other middleweights and as such a GGG -vs- Ward fight is what I would love to see. A victory for either man in that fight really would be a legacy enhancer.
This is getting ridiculous. I rate GGG, he does seem like the real deal but exactly what has he done so far that warrants comparisons to Marvin ****ing Hagler?
Understand that wasn't a prime Hagler who fought Mugabi. I won't go near this one. Hagler is one of my all-time favorite boxers, and Golovkin is my favorite middleweight at the moment.
GGG has beat Mathew Macklin, who is slightly better than Euro level. Let's not get ahead ourselves hey.
I really like Golovkin, he's very talented but at his age, this is as good as he gets. So essentially he's fighting in his prime right now and probably won't improve much more, which is OK because he's a beast of a MW already. He has very good technical ability but it looks like it's rather easy to hit him. He does have pretty good head movement, but fighters with very good technical ability should have no problem hitting him with shots upstairs. Macklin's style was tailor made for GGG, and he never really had a chance to set himself up until the 3rd round when Macklin actually landed a few nice shots. I'd love to see GGG against Ward. Ward doesn't have 1 punch KO power, but he can break you down as the fight goes on and the accumulation of punches he throws can end up stopping guys. I'd call that a 60/40 fight for Ward because I can't see GGG being able to cut off the ring or be able to Land anything significant on Ward. But if he does, it can end up being really interesting. As far as Hagler, he's the greatest MW I ever saw live, probably ranked just under Ray Robinson and over the great Monzon. He had great technical ability, could brawl when needed to, tremendous power in both hands, and a granite chin. From what I've seen of GGG the last 2 years, I don't see him having a puncher's chance even with Hagler. There's no hypothetical situation where I see anyone knockout Hagler at 160, he's been in the ring with some pretty incredible punchers who couldn't put him down. And GGG would have to KO Hagler to beat him because I don't see him outboxing Marvelous in a 12 or 15 round fight. Hagler by late TKO.
Let's not disrespect either man by picking a winner. Obviously the Marvellous has an established, deep resume to go with his ATG MW ranking. Golovkin has just started out.. let him grow into THE undisputed champion and let us see his dominance before we praise or trash him.
As much as I'm a fan of GGG, its far far far to early to even think of comparing him to the Haglers of this world.
