Rocky Marciano's so called punching power

Marciano was a terrific fighter, dedicated, tough as nails, a murderous puncher and a true warrior .. however he was the only white heavyweight champion from 1937 to the Klitschko Brothers and that has a mjor impact on how he is looked upon by many lovers and haters ... He retired undefeated and pretty much fought everyone that he could but he fought in an era where his greatest competition was all past their best days .. Many of his fans try to build cases that Charles, Walcott, Louis and Moore were all exceptions to age and terrific fighters when Rocky beat them while his haters claim they were nothing when of course the answer lies in the middle .. they were all past their best but still dangerous fighters ..

Marciano is so often described by his hardcore fans as having that something extra, an "it" factor comprised of heart, will, conditioning that simply separates him, even from others greats ( and rational arguments against size, lack of reach, lack of fighting a huge heavyweight puncher, resistance to cuts, act. ) that I find it racist ... to say he had more heart of drive or stamina than a Frazier per say is absurd. They are all in a certain class of over achiever who had to overcome physical handicaps to excel.

While individually anyone can look at Marciano and put race aside you cannot deny that race plays a major role as a whole in how Rocky is viewed by many on both sides, be it hater or hardcore fan and it's not simply black on one side, white on another ... he is unfortunately often a polarizing figure, an icon in a sport with long, deep sociological roots ... putting that crap aside , he simply should be remembered for what he was, a terrific, hard as nails warrior.

might as well stop thread X vs X being made then, like janitor said everything said is backed up,we dont make outrageous claims or anything without solid proof..by the way where does it end? is it absurd to say Foreman hit the hardest? No, I admit that most people fall into the grey area between.

When you compare the MarcianoFraziers of this world to the Revolvers and Shawn Kemps, it almost seems like a straight up fight between good and evil.

Here is where things get interesting.

It obviously has a major impact on how he is is viewed by his haters. It probably had a major impact on how he was viewed by his suporters at the time. His suporters today, are a somewhat different group of people.

A pro Marciano person today, will typicaly not be a Klitschko suporter, and will probably have a prety high opinion of Joe Louis by comparison. Indeed when another white dominant champion final came along, the Marciano suporters remained loyal to him, and stayed very much rooted in the 1950s.

We agree that it was not the strongest era ever, but you can only fight what is around at the time.

Rocky Marciano did have an X factor, and I will tell you what it is. Today he would be classed as suffering from "obsesive compulsive disorder", which is essentialy a mental illness. He did not have more heart than Frazier, but he had an obsesion with his training which was unhealthy.

It is unfortunate that he is a polarizing figure in many ways, because he was not what his detractors hate in him.

He was the white champion who never drew the colour line.

He was a humble and unasuming man.

Hilarious how no ******ed Marciano fan has answer the question yet. Name one 220 pound world class heavyweight that Marciano fought and knocked out.

Ever try hitting a 300 pound heavy bag? Average persons punches bounce off hitting a bag like that. Marciano hit it every day and hit it like others hit a standard bag. This alone is a testament of his punching power.

I think we agree on most issues although I think you are minimizing how much being the last "great" white heavyweight impacted an American culture that saw white dominance vaporize in boxing as well as football, baseball and basketball in the decades following WW2. It's been close to sixty years since Rocky was champ and most who remember him at all today grew up hearing about him in stories passed on down, often by family like favorite ball teams ... as far as the Klitscko point, as I said it is not always a matter of black or white ... the Klitskos also never caught on in the US to a large degree because they are not American, did not grown up in front of US audiences and rarely fight here ..

As far as the special factor, be it it or x, your diagnosis of Rocky is interesting if undiagnosed but you still manage to deny such condition for any for his own fanatics ...on that one I see you copping out on a full picture.

Putting aside the fact that he was old when he lost to Rocky, Louis himself said that "Rocky sure could hit."

My thought on this thread is not to say Marciano was the hardest hitter ever as I do not think he was ... however, he was a big time puncher, especially pound for pound .. while anyone can deny anything it's a hard point to try and actually prove ..

Kemps a real....well...."different" character. Why all the seething hate towards one of the real good guys in boxing history? Rockys punching power is a given. His power is certainly on par with Dempsey or Louis....among the hardest in hwt history. All three had the ability to put their body weight behind their punches which in many ways is a lost art today.
