surely a britsh middleweight boxer with a good record should be a lot more popular than maklin... i read 3 papers today ( indie , times , mail ) and read a small paragragh in The Times... he seems to of abandoned the UK and not really become popular with the Irsh support he desires... im just confused by him

Well he was Brummy who suddenly decided to play on his Irish roots, I don't even remember Macklin's heritage even being mentioned in his early fights. It's easier to promote Macklin in America now anyway. He's an Irishman they can actually understand!

  3. I like macklin he is an intelligent Brummie,a rarity in itself
He comes to fight and has probaly overachieved
3 title attempts away from home against dominant champions in sturm,Martinez and golovkin mean more to me when I make an opinion on him than his confused nationality

There's nothing confusing about his nationality. He couldn't sell tickets as a Brummie so he started marketing himself as Irish. Good luck to him - if he was more popular he wouldn't have had to fight three top champions away from home.

Its ultimately up to him, if he feels irish then that's for him to decide, no one else. Its like furey too I suppose. However if its a marketing ploy, then good luck to them also, fans eat that type of stuff up.

Who gives a **** where he is from - sick of this Irish/English nonsense.

The man managed his own career very well and has always been willing to step up and take on a challenge. While he hasn't picked up a world strap he still had a fantastic career and seems to have made a bit of money along the way.

His defeat at the weekend hopefully means some very interesting domestic match ups get made.

Just watched the Jamie Moore fight today and Macklin came to the ring with some Irish sounding enterance music,Brian Peters and big Joe Egan who are both Dubliners and he wore dark green celtic shorts.Yes hes from Birmingham but hes always wore his Irish roots proudly.Nothing wrong with being proud of your heritage, dont see what the point in this thread is.

He's blatantly appealing to the plastic paddies in America who are ashamed of their own culture and country so are latching on to other cultures no matter how minor the connection. (My great-grandfather was Irish. That makes me Irish too!)

But eh, if it works to sell tickets to idiotic Americans then fair play to him.

I wouldn't call Macklin unpopular he has had plenty of support as an exciting come forward fighter but it's hard to judge as he's been fighting in the USA for the last 18 months or so.

I think he should come back to the UK and take the big domestic fights now those are the biggest pay days for him, he'll be all over the winner of Barker v Geale although I think Soliman has promised a shot at whoever wins.

not got a problem with the Irish thing, a lot of Brummies are from Irish decent fair enough.

But he's not as popular over here (Ireland or Britain) because HE made the choice to go down the american route and imo came across as arrogant as if this made him better than the UK middleweights like Barker and Murray.

Maybe now he's failed 3 times in America he will have to come back cap in hand and look at making one of those fights.

In fairness to Macklin he had the chance to go and fight on HBO and earn some good money fighting for a world title. He had actually signed to fight Barker but Darren got injured and Martin Murray wasn't even a serious contender when Macklin moved abroad.

I think Di Bella will lose interest in him now as he isn't likely to get another title shot anytime soon....

After getting paid x 3 - he can now fight those guys - and get paid times 5.

If he had of taken them earlier maybe he loses and doesnt get paid x 5.

    Use ur head.

Oh and to join in 'macklin is a plastic paddy *******!' (even though theres probably a bigger population in Birmingham than the whole of Ireland) and he should never talk about and be ashamed that his family, on both sides, are Irish.

I wonder if he parents were Chinese and he did the same thing with China, would it be different?

lets hope so, I'd love to see Martin smash him round the ring.

Can't think of anything worse than an arrogant Brummie :D
