The most amazing attribute of Golovkin is his calm awareness in a fight. Watching him dismantle Macklin I noticed that he looks like he is reading a book. No fear, no panic, no confusion, just total confidence. When Mack tried to clinch I saw Golovkin just pause to conserve energy and when Mack hit on the break, Golovkin didn't even react. I think this shows how in control he is mentally. When Macklin slipped on something wet in the corner, GGG had the peace of mind to let him out of the corner. Contrast this with Floyd looking for a way out of the fight with Ortiz. I think Golovkin has about seen it all in the ring because of his extensive amateur record, and this experience gives him a level of confidence that can propel him to greatness. The power and strength is just icing on the cake, and also a nightmare for anyone's confidence that has to face him.
Indeed, I've posted a few times now about how Golovkins greatest talent is not his power, but his ability to understand and control the ring. It just looks like he was born there, each fight is like coming home to where he belongs. I believe that even without his now almost mythical punching power, Gennady would have the tools to be a champion, or at least a serious contender. I appreciate that it's too early for too many accolades, but I can see him dominating the division for a long time to come. His understanding of how to win a fight is just as great as his ability to fight it.
Many things set him apart from the rest. Not just power, and yes I think he will be one of the very best years from now.
He is extremely intelligent. Usually, guys this smart are defensive wizards ala Mayweather, are dirty fighters (Ward, Hopkins), or lack dedication/discipline (Lennox/Jones/Toney). Here we have a disciplined, dedicated powerpuncher who also knows the ins and outs of boxing science from having studied it religiously. A rare combination indeed.
You guys are having major hardons for this guy arent you?? Macklin is just a average fighter at best. GGG has lots of flaws but you guys are to horny to notice.
Indeed, and if FMJs goona be brought up, so too Ward. All three of these fighters show a ring knowledge and understanding of boxing which sets them apart. There will be many, naturally who will say GGG doesn't belong is this kinda august company (and fair enough, time will tell) but if you watch him for a bit, you get to understand how impressive his feel for the ring is - he's never rattled, never uncertain, always thinking on the move.
Name the many flaws orthewize you are just as bad as the one who say he is the second coming of Mohamed.
