Now if you said Ali, Holmes, Foreman etc were great and so were Holyfield and Lewis, I'd have no quarrel with that; it's the belittling of former champs that riles me. As to the original question, I would pick Ali or Louis as the best, but I rate Holyfield highly and Lewis was excellent, too. You do make some fair points regarding Ali regarding his holding behind the head, though. I also agree that Ali is fair game for criticism and some people think he isn't.
Strong cases can be made for Ali or Louis at #1, Louis' dominance cannot be understated. On a side note, I'd favor Ali over Louis in a fight in their respective primes. I think Ali's footwork and handspeed would've been too much for the Brown Bomber.
