At only 22 he has plenty of fights but not high level fights. He seems to still be improving as a fighter. So why now? why not wait another year and take a couple more fights? He could fight a couple top guys and really just season himself even more at the highest levels.

    Floyd will continue to age.

Just look at Floyd himself, he did not fight Mosley or DeLaHoya in their prime. He waited till they were worn down. Canelo could have used the same strategy.

Mosley when asked if Canelo could beat Floyd, he knew right away the answer was no. It seems so obvious that at this point in time Canelo is not ready and he may suffer a huge career set back.

If Floyd KO's him his career could spiral down.

Anyone else think the timing is all wrong for Canelo?

No, it's pretty much a win-win situation for Canelo. If he beats Floyd, he has done something no one has officially done in beating the P4P best fighter in the world. If he loses, he's not likely to do so taking any kind of severe beating as Floyd will probably be at his safety-first best with Canelo's power, plus he lost to the best fighter in the world when he was green and weight drained, so he has ready-made legitimate excuses. Either way he gets a career-best payday.

Also, there's no guarantee that the Floyd fight would materialize down the line as you describe, Floyd isn't likely to fight for that much longer.

If Floyd stops Canelo, which is not outside the realm of possibilities, then I'd have to agree that Goldenboy had made a mistake in feeding him to Floyd...

I find it hard to consider taking part in the biggest fight in the sport a strategic mistake. Also if Canelo waits for another year or two, he may be unable to make a weight at which he could fight Floyd or Mayweather could simply retire in that period.

IMO, Goldenboy is simply reading the writing on the wall. We learned a lot about Alvarez in his last fight and GB knows he can't keep fighting 140lb'ers and 147lb'ers forever. Sooner or later he's going to have to start fighting some REAL 154lb and 160lb fighters and the waters at those weights are starting to become shark infested. I'm very confident in saying that there are ass-whippings waiting for Canelo when he eventually moves to 160 - if one of the REAL 154lb'ers doesn't get to him first.

The Mayweather fight is merely GB getting maximum return on investment...

Its a win win and for me a very good move by canelos team.

If he wins. He is a star.

If he loses. He is a star that lost to the best fighter on the planet. His name will grow even more.

Its that simple and a very good business move to get Canelo into the spotlight even more, win or lose

If he loses badly you think he will stay a star?

Canelo is putting all of mexico on his back, so when floyd embarrasses him he will be ruined, his invincibility will be gone, fans will turn their backs on him and go find another fighter to bandwagon on to beat floyd.

its not what happens on 9/14 but thereafter.

Molina, vanes, lara and especially Rosado...I cant see canelito going anything better that 2-2 even with the gbp judges.

any talk of 160 is by someone that knows very little of boxing.

ffs, ggg's simply wrecking dudes and there is doubt by those in the know that he would probably struggle at 168(e.g Arthur Abraham).

147 mosley going twelve rounds with canelito and being able to throw the same amount of punches as alvarez in rounds 10-12 after taking everything that saul could dish out tells you what kind of 154 he is.

Great payday for Alvarez, but if he gets humanilated or stopped then it's a very bad decision, and like people say i'd like to see him against real 154-160'er fighters.

This right here illustrates the problem with your line of thinking. Mayweather did not wait for Hoya or Mosley to get old. He had been begging for a fight with both for years. However, the risk/reward ratio was out of whack so neither had any interest in fighting Mayweather. Once Mayweather represented a bigger reward, then they wanted to fight them. By that time though they were older fighters.

Canelo is in almost the same postion Mayweather was. He can't dictate anything. Mayweather is already up there in age, he's not going to wait around until he's on his last leg for Canelo to fight him. Canelo was offered an 8 figure payday. If Canelo turns it down, he might have never received another opportunity.
